Families of the Children of Susanah5 Washburn and Josiah Perry

The children of Susanah Washburn and Josiah Perry are difficult to research because of the other Perry families living in Saratoga County and the lack of a will by Josiah Perry to prove which children were actually his. Josiah Perry had brothers named Seth Perry and Rowland Perry, who also lived in the same areas in Saratoga Co., NY, and some of their children and grandchildren were given the same names as Josiah’s children and grandchildren, so this is another file that may need correcting in the future, and should be considered a work in progress.

(1374.) Seth W. Perry, eldest son of (449) Susanah5 Washburn, (128) Miles4, (59) Joseph3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in New York in say ca. 1765,[1] married Sarah “Sallie” Shipman,[2] and they were living next door to his father in Northumberland, Saratoga Co., NY, in the 1810 federal census,[3] and in Wilton, Saratoga Co., NY, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[4] but he does not appear to have been the Seth Perry who was a head of household in Wilton, NY, in the 1830 federal census. His wife was probably the Sally Perry living in Wilton, NY, in the 1830 federal census, next door to Josiah Perry and Squire Perry.[5]

Seth W. Perry died testate in ca. 1835 in Saratoga Co., NY. His will was dated 18 Jan. 1825, witnessed by Seth Perry, Squire Perry, and Hiram A. Perry, and probated on 28 May 1835 in Saratoga Co., NY. He mentioned his wife Sarah Perry, eldest sons Charles Perry and Johnson Perry, third son Calvin Perry, daughters Joanna Perry and Mary Perry, both under the age of 18, and youngest sons Hial Perry and Elmon Perry.[6] His wife, Sarah (Shipman) Perry, was still alive in 1825 when he wrote his will, but had died before the 1835 probate of his will. (See Appendix [A] for a full transcription of his will.)

Seth W. Perry and Sarah Shipman had children,[7] order uncertain:

3441     i   Charles Perry, born say ca. 1795 in Wilton, NY, mentioned in the 1825 will of his father, Seth W. Perry, as one of his two eldest sons. He was presumably the Charles Perry who was married and living in Stillwater, Saratoga Co., NY, in the 1840 federal census,[8] but he was not found in Saratoga Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census. He supposedly died in 1865.[9]

3442    ii   Johnson Perry, born in 1796 in Wilton, NY,[10] mentioned in the 1825 will of his father, Seth W. Perry, married Saloma P. White.[11] She was born in 1801 in NY,[12] and they were living next door to Seth W. Perry and Josiah Perry in Wilton, Saratoga Co., NY, in the 1820,[13] and 1830 federal censuses,[14] where he was a farmer. He was probably the Johnston Perry living in Wilton, NY, in the 1840 federal census,[15] and he was still living in Wilton, NY, in the 1850 federal census, next door to a Kellogg Perry.[16] On 1 Apr. 1841 Johnson and Saloma Perry, of Wilton, sold to John White, of Wilton, 102 acres of land in lot #7 in the subdivision of lot #2 in the subdivision of lot #8 in the Kayaderosseras Patent in Wilton for $130,[17] and on 1 Jan. 1850 Johnson and Saloma Perry sold 40 acres off the northwest corner of lot #2 in the subdivision of lot #3 in the Kayaderosseras Patent in Wilton to the trustees of the First Baptist Church in Wilton for $400.[18] She died on 8 Jan. 1852, aged 51 years,[19] presumably in Saratoga Co., NY, and was buried in Brick Church Cemetery in Wilton, Saratoga Co., NY. He was still living in Wilton, NY, in the 1855 state census,[20] and with his daughter and son-in-law, Pamilla and Sabiska Perry, in Canton, Fulton Co., IL, in the 1860 federal census,[21] where he was a farmer, and with his grandson George Palmer in Canton, IL, in the 1870 federal census.[22] He died on 10 Feb. 1876 in Canton, Fulton Co., IL,[23] and was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Canton, Fulton Co., IL, but his gravestone is now missing. They had children:

a. Mary “Polly” Perry, born on 7 Jan. 1823 in Wilton, Saratoga Co., NY,[24] married Sidney D. Palmer, son of Hiram and Catharine (Boyce) Palmer,[25] on 4 July 1844 in Saratoga Springs, Saratoga Co., NY.[26] He was born on 16 Feb. 1823 in Clifton Park, Saratoga Co., NY.[27] They were living in Wilton, Saratoga Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census, where his widowed mother was living with them,[28] and in Canton, Fulton Co., IL, in the 1860 federal census,[29] where he was a carpenter. He served as a Private in Company G, the 11th Illinois Cavalry during the Civil War, and was killed on 11 June 1863.[30] She was living with her son, George Palmer, in Canton, IL, in the 1870 federal census,[31] she was a widow keeping house for Hannah Stilman in Canton, IL, in the 1880 federal census,[32] and she was still living in Canton, IL, in the 1900 federal census.[33] She died a widow on 22 Apr. 1902 in Canton, IL, aged 79 years,[34] and they were both buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Canton, Fulton Co., IL.

c. Seth W. Perry, born on 3 Oct. ca. 1829 in Saratoga Co., NY,[46] was unmarried and living with Curtis and Triphena Colby in Wilson, Niagara Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census,[47] probably a farm laborer, served in Company C, the 43rd Regiment of New York State Volunteers during the Civil War, and married 1.) Waity Thayer, daughter of Isaac and Waity (Dolliver) Thayer, of Otsego Co., NY.[48] She was born ca. 1830 in NY.[49] They were living in Otego, Otsego Co., NY, in the 1855 state census,[50] and the 1860 federal census,[51] where he was a farmer.     [345] Per the 1830 Federal Census of Wilton, Saratoga Co., NY, p. 257, this older Seth Perry was apparently already at least 70 years of age in 1830, and was aged 45 or over in the 1820 federal census, and he died testate in May 1845 in Wilton, NY. His will was dated 9 Apr. 1845, witnessed by George W. Perry, Andrew J. Perry, and Harriet M. Perry, all of Wilton, and probated on 31 July 1848. He mentioned his wife Anna Perry, his sons Cyrus Perry and John F. W. Perry, whom he appointed as executors, and daughters Malinda Perry and Maria Jones. The list of his heirs at probate revealed that daughter Malinda Perry was the wife of William Perry, and daughter Maria Jones was the wife of Eldad Jones of Clifton Park, Saratoga Co., and that witness Andrew J. Perry was of New York City, NY, by 1848. [Record of Wills, Saratoga County, Book 14, p. 470, from FHL microfilm #0555722.] John F. W. Perry was enumerated next door to Seth Perry in Wilton in the 1830 federal census, and he was aged 20-29 years at that time, so he could not have been the son of Seth Perry born ca. 1794.
