(1264.) Susanna6 Washburn, eldest daughter of (426) Benjamin5 Washburn (Jr.), (126) Capt. Benjamin4, (58) Samuel3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, MA, on 18 May 1749,[1] married Lt. James Hooper (Jr.), son of James and Mary (Johnson) Hooper,[2] on 6 Feb. 1772 in Bridgewater.[3] He was born in May 1746,[4] a grandson of Capt. Isaac and Abiah (Leavitt) (Lazell) Johnson, of West Bridgewater.[5] They were living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1790 federal census, next door to her father, Benjamin Washburn,[6] in the 1800 federal census,[7] and in Bridgewater’s South Parish in the 1810 federal census.[8]

        Lt. James Hooper (Jr.) died testate on 31 Oct. 1828 in Bridgewater, of “old age,” aged 82 years “last May,”[9] his will dated 22 Sept. 1828, and probated on 4 Nov. 1828, mentioned his wife Susannah, his son Isaac, daughters Mary, Susannah, and Azubah, and his son Levi Hooper, who he named as executor of his estate.[10] (See Appendix [A] for a full transcription of his will.) Susanna (Washburn) Hooper died a widow on 9 Mar. 1833 in Bridgewater, aged 84 years,[11] but no probate records were filed for her estate.

        Susanna Washburn and Lt. James Hooper had chil­dren:

        3192     i   Isaac Hooper, born on 3 May 1772 in Bridgewater,[12] married Sarah Wood, daugh­ter of Capt. Simeon and Mary “Marcy” (Randall) (Keith) Wood, on 5 Mar. 1799 in Bridgewater.[13] She was born on 18 Aug. 1775 in Bridgewater,[14] a granddaughter of Ebenezer and Lydia (Lovell) Wood, of Middleborough.[15] They moved to Worcester Co., MA. They were living in New Braintree, Worcester Co., MA, in the 1800 federal census,[16] in Barre, Worcester Co., MA, in the 1810 federal census,[17] in Oakham, Worcester Co., MA, in the 1820 federal census,[18] and in Boylston, Worcester Co., MA, in the 1830 federal census,[19] and they were probably living with their son Charles Hooper in Boylston, MA, in the 1840 federal census. He died on 25 Feb. 1841 in Boylston, Worcester Co., MA, aged 69 years,[20] but no probate records were filed for his estate. She was still living with their son Charles Hooper in Boylston, MA, in the 1850 federal census, and she died a widow on 17 Feb. 1853 in Boylston, MA, aged 77 years,[21] and they were both buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Boylston, Worcester Co., MA. They had children:[22]

a. Isaac Hooper (Jr.), born on 15 Dec. 1800 in New Braintree, Worcester Co., MA,[23] died on 16 Dec. 1800 in New Braintree.[24]

b. Mary Hooper, born on 27 Jan. 1802 in New Braintree, MA,[25] marriage not found, unless she was called “Cassandra” and married Asher Bliss, of Andover, MA, son of Simeon and Lucy Bliss,[26] on 2 Sept. 1832 in Shrewsbury, MA.[27] He was born supposedly on 20 Feb. 1801 in West Fairlee, VT,[28] and he was a missionary to the Seneca Indians in the Cattaraugus Reservation in Erie Co., NY.[29] They were living in Collins, Erie Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census,[30] in Corydon, Warren Co., PA, in the 1860 federal census,[31] and in South Valley, Cattaraugus Co., NY, in the 1870 federal census, where apparently her widowed sister Avis Rockwood was living with them.[32] Cassandra (Hooper) Bliss died on 21 Apr. 1879 in South Valley, Cattaraugus Co., NY, aged 77 years,[33] and Asher Bliss died on 23 Mar. 1881 in South Valley, NY, aged 80 years,[34] and they were both buried in Riverview Cemetery in Warren Co., PA.

c. (Supposedly) James J. Hooper, born on 27 May 1804, died unmarried on 10 Dec. 1833 in New Orleans, LA.[35]

d. (Probably) Avis Bowman Hooper, born on 31 Mar. 1806, supposedly in Oakham, MA,[36] married Rev. Gilbert Rockwood, of Monson, MA, son of John and Hannah (Upham) Rockwood,[37] on 6 Nov. 1837 in Boylston, MA.[38] He was born supposedly on 29 Aug. 1811 in Warren, MA,[39] and was a missionary to the Tuscarora Indians in Niagara Co., NY.[40] They were living in Lewiston, Niagara Co., NY, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a Congregationalist Minister,[41] and the 1860 federal census, where he was a clergyman.[42] He died on 21 Sept. 1869, aged 58 years,[43] and she was living with Asher and Cassandra Bliss in South Valley, Cattaraugus Co., NY, in the 1870 federal census.[44] She died on 30 Sept. 1879 in Lockport, Niagara Co., NY,[45] and they were both buried in Hillside Cemetery in Monson, Hampshire Co., MA.

e. (Supposedly) Lydia W. Hooper, born on 7 June 1808,[46] married John Adams on 17 Nov. 1842.[47] He was born on 3 Nov. 1908 in Enosburg, Franklin Co., VT.[48] They were living in Hebron, McHenry Co., IL, in the 1850,[49] and 1860 federal censuses,[50] where he was a farmer. She died on 7 May 1869 in Hebron McHenry Co., IL, aged 60 years,[51] and he died on 13 Dec. 1874 in Hebron, IL,[52] and they were both buried in Linn-Hebron Cemetery in Hebron, McHenry Co., IL.

f. (Supposedly) Isaac Hooper (Jr.), born on 10 Aug. 1811, died on 23 Jan. 1811.[53]

g. Eunice Hooper, born on 23 Jan. 1813, married Samuel Holland (Jr.), of Leominster, MA, son of Samuel and Mitty (Harris) Holland,[54] as his second wife, on 27 June 1847 in Sterling, MA.[55] He was born on 3 Oct. 1801 in Newfane, VT.[56] They were not found in the 1850 federal census. He committed suicide on 26 Dec. 1854 in Leominster, MA, aged 52 years, 2 months, 23 days,[57] and she was probably living with her sister and brother-in-law, John and Lydia Adams, in Hebron, McHenry Co., IL, in the 1860 federal census.[58] She supposedly died on 25 May 1870,[59] and was buried in Riverview Cemetery in Warren Co., PA.

h. Charles Hooper, born on ca. 7 Sept. 1817 in Oakham, MA,[60] married Polly S. Andrews, daughter of Asa and Polly (Seaver) Andrews, of Boylston, MA,[61] on 29 Oct. 1839 in Boylston, Worcester Co., MA.[62] She was a twin, born on 1 Jan. 1816 in Boylston.[63] They were living in Boylston, Worcester Co., MA, in the 1840 federal census, where his parents were probably living with them,[64] and in the 1850 federal census, where his widowed mother was living with them.[65] He served in Company C, in the 24th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.[66] She died on 28 Oct. 1871 in Southborough, Worcester Co., MA, aged 55 years,[67] and he died a widower on 24 Oct. 1899 in Leominster, Worcester Co., MA, aged 82 years, 1 month, 17 days, of “fracture of hip & exhaustion,”[68] and they were both buried in Southborough Rural Cemetery in Southborough, Worcester Co., MA.

        3193    ii   Molly Hooper, born on 20 June 1774 in Bridgewater,[69] never married, died on 26 Dec. 1845 in Bridgewater, aged 71 years, of “dropsy.”[70]

        3194   iii   Susanna Hooper, born on 29 Aug. 1776 in Bridgewater,[71] married Lt. Rufus Wood, son of Capt. Simeon and (2425) Lydia7 (Washburn) Wood, in 1800.[72] He was born on 15 Mar. 1779 in Bridgewater,[73] a grandson of Ebenezer and Lydia (Lovell) Wood, of Middleborough,[74] and of (927) Jeremiah6 and Charity (Pratt) Washburn, of Bridgewater.[75] They were living in Bridgewater in the 1810,[76] 1820,[77] 1830,[78] and 1840 federal censuses,[79] where he was a farmer. He died intestate on 31 Aug. 1845 in Bridgewater, aged 66 years, of “cancerous humors and schirrous stomach.”[80] Philo Leach, of Bridgewater, was granted administration of his estate on 7 Oct. 1845, at the request of the widow, Susannah Wood, and Willard Wood and Rachel Allen, the children of the deceased.[81] She died a widow on 7 July 1849 in Bridgewater, of paralysis, aged 72 years, 11 months, 8 days,[82] and they were both buried in Conant Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA, but no probate records were filed for her estate. (See the family of Lt. Rufus Wood for their children.)

        3195   iv   Eunice Hooper, born ca. 1779 in Bridgewater,[83] died on 29 June 1795 in Bridgewater, aged 16 years.[84]

        3196    v   (Unnamed son), born and died on 10 Mar. 1781 in Bridgewater,[85] and was buried in the Old Graveyard in Bridgewater.

        3197   vi   Azubah Hooper, born on 26 Oct. 1783 in Bridgewater,[86] married Zephani­ah Caswell on 27 Mar. 1803 in Bridgewater.[87] He was born on 10 May 1779,[88] and they lived in Bridgewater. They were living in Bridgewater in the 1830,[89] 1840,[90] and 1850 federal censuses, where he was a carpenter.[91] He committed suicide, intes­tate on 17 Jan. 1851 in Bridgewater, aged 71 years,[92] and Philo Leach, of Bridgewater, was granted administration of his estate on 20 Jan. 1851, at the request of his widow Azubah Caswell.[93] She was living with the family of her son-in-law, Wil­lard Wood, in Bridgewater, in the 1855 state census,[94] and in Middleborough in the 1860 federal census.[95] She died a widow on 10 May 1864 in Middleborough, MA, aged 80 years, 6 months, 24 days, of “senile mortification.”[96] They had children:

a. Zephaniah Caswell (Jr.), born on 21 Sept. 1804 in Bridge­water,[97] mar­ried Anna Waterman Chipman, daughter of George and Huldah6 (Leach) Chipman, on 6 May 1827 in Bridgewater.[98] She was born on 9 Aug. 1804 in Bridgewater, a granddaughter of James5 and Hazadiah4 (Keith) Leach.[99] They were living next door to his parents in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1830 federal census.[100] He died on 16 Sept. 1834 in Bridgewater, of “rheumatism and consumption,” aged 30 years,[101] and was buried in the Old Cemetery in Bridgewater, but no probate records were filed for his estate, and she remar­ried to her brother‑in‑law, Willard Wood, son of Lt. Rufus and Susanna (Hooper) Wood, and widower of his sis­ter, Harri­et (Caswell) Wood, in 1844 in Bridgewater.[102] She died after 1865. They had a daughter:

1. Susan Hooper Caswell, born on 27 Apr. 1830 in Bridgewater,[103] was still unmarried and living with her mother and stepfather in Bridgewater in the 1850 federal census.

b. Harriet Caswell, born on 1 Sept. 1806 in Bridgewater,[104] married Wil­lard Wood, her first cousin, son of Lt. Rufus and (3194) Susanna (Hooper) Wood, on 30 Apr. 1826 in Bridgewater.[105] He was born on 19 June 1802 in Bridgewater,[106] a grandson of Lt. James and (1264) Susanna6 (Washburn) Hooper (Jr.), and of Capt. Simeon and (2425) Lydia7 (Washburn) Wood. He was living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1830 federal census.[107] She died on 16 Sept. 1843 in  Bridgewater, of “typhus fever,” aged 36 years,[108] and he remar­ried to his sister‑in‑law, Anna Waterman (Chipman) Caswell, daugh­ter of George and Huldah6 (Leach) Chipman, and widow of her brother, Zephaniah Caswell (Jr.), in 1844 in Bridgewater.[109] He was a shoemaker and farmer, and was liv­ing in Bridgewater in the 1850 federal census with Zephaniah and Azubah Caswell,[110] and in Bridgewater in the 1855 state census,[111] and in Middleborough, MA, in the 1860 federal census,[112] where he was a farmer, and his widowed mother-in-law Azubah H. Caswell was living with them. They were still living in Middleborough in the 1865 state census,[113] and the 1870 federal census,[114] where he was a farmer. She died on 23 Feb. 1875 in Middleborough, aged 70 years, 7 months, 14 days, of pneumonia,[115] and he was living with his son Warren Wood in Middleborough in the 1880 federal census.[116] He died a widower on 2 Apr. 1887 in Middleborough, aged 84 years, 9 months, 14 days, of “cystitis,”[117] and they were both buried in Conant Street Cemetery in Bridgewater. Harriet (Caswell) Wood had children:

1. Rufus Winslow Wood, born on 27 June 1827 in Bridgewater,[118] married his first cousin, Eunice H. W. Copeland, daughter of Christopher Dyer and Eunice H. (Wood) Copeland, of Bridgewater,[119] on 3 May 1849 in Bridgewater.[120] She was born on 17 Feb. 1831 in Bridgewater,[121] a granddaughter of Lt. Rufus and (3194) Susanna (Hooper) Wood.[122] They were living in Bridgewater with the family of his aunt and uncle Oliver and Rachel (Wood) Allen in the 1850 federal census,[123] and the 1855 state census,[124] and with the widow Rachel Allen in the 1860 federal census,[125] where he was a shoemaker. He served as Musician in the 18th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War,[126] and died on 5 Aug. 1862 in Charles City County, VA, aged 35 years, 1 month, 17 days.[127] She was still living in Bridgewater, MA, with her father Christopher D. Copeland in the 1870 federal census,[128] and in the 1880 federal census.[129] She died a widow on 26 Jan. 1918 in Bridgewater, aged 86 years 11 months, 9 days, of “chronic myocardial insufficiency,”[130] and they were both buried in Mount Prospect Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA.

2. Jane Hooper Wood, born on 8 May 1831 in Bridgewater,[131] died on 5 Mar. 1834 in Bridgewater, aged 3 years, of “canker rash.”[132]

3. James H. Wood,[133] died on 15 Mar. 1834 in Bridgewater, aged 2 years, 9 months, 25 days,[134] and was buried in Conant Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA.

4. Warren Wood, born on 2 Apr. 1835 in Bridgewater,[135] was still unmarried and living with his father in Bridgewater in the 1855 state census, married Julia M. Caswell, of Middleborough, daughter of Salmon and Mary “Polly” (Gibbs) Caswell,[136] on 3 June 1856 in Bridgewater.[137] She was born on 28 Oct. 1832 in Middleborough.[138] They were living in Middleborough, MA, in the 1860 federal census,[139] and the 1865 state census,[140] where he was a shoemaker, the 1870 federal census, where he was working in straw,[141] and the 1880 federal census, where he was a painter, and his widowed father and her parents were living with them.[142] He died on 12 Nov. 1892 in Middleborough, aged 57 years, 7 months, 10 days, of “brain trouble,”[143] and she died a widow on 15 Sept. 1912 in Middleborough, aged 79 years, 10 months, 18 days, of “rhaumetoid arthritis.”[144]

c. Winslow Wood Caswell, born on 7 Mar. 1809 in Bridgewater,[145] mar­ried Maria “Mary” Antoi­nette Wood on 8 Dec. 1835 in Bridgewater.[146] She died, how­ever, on 14 Mar. 1837 in Bridgewater, of “puerpural convultions,” aged 22 years,[147] and he died on 26 Apr. 1837 in Bridgewater, of “consumption,” aged 28 years,[148] and they were both buried in the Old Graveyard in Bridgewater, but no probate records were filed for his estate. They had a son:

1. Freeman Winslow Caswell, born on 6 Feb. 1837 in Bridgewater,[149] died on 14 Apr. 1837 in Bridgewater, aged 9 weeks, of “canker,”[150] and was also buried in the Old Graveyard in Bridgewater.

d. Susanna “Susan” Hooper Caswell, born on 15 Sept. 1814 in Bridge­water,[151] died on 16 Dec. 1829 in Bridgewater, aged 15 years, of “rheumatism,”[152] and was buried in the Old Graveyard in Bridgewater.

        3198  vii   Parnel Hooper, born on 6 Apr. 1786 in Bridgewater,[153] never married, died on 27 Sept. 1825 in Bridgewater, aged 39 years, of “apoplexy,”[154] and was buried in the Old Graveyard in Bridgewater.

        3199 viii   James Hooper (3rd), born ca. May 1788,[155] died on 27 Mar. 1789 in Bridgewater, aged 10 months,[156] and was buried in the Old Graveyard in Bridgewater.

        3200   ix   Levi Hooper, born on 27 Dec. 1790 in Bridgewater,[157] married Fanny Robin­son, daughter of Ebenezer and Fanny Robinson, of Taunton,[158] on 7 Nov. 1837 in Taunton.[159] She was born on ca. 28 Dec. 1797 in Taunton, MA.[160] He was executor of his father's will in 1828, and they were living in Bridgewater in the 1840,[161] and 1850 federal censuses,[162] the 1855 state census,[163] the 1860 federal census,[164] and the 1865 state cen­sus­,[165] where he was a farmer. He died on 2 May 1869 in Bridgewater, aged 78 years, 4 months, 5 days, of “dropsy,”[166] but no pro­bate re­cords were filed for his estate in Plym­outh Coun­ty, and she was living with her daughter and son-in-law, James F. and Parney Leach, in Bridgewater, in the 1870,[167] and 1880 federal censuses.[168] She died a widow on 3 Oct. 1884 in Bridgewater, aged 86 years, 10 months, 5 days, of “old age.”[169] They had at least one daughter:

a. Parna “Parney” Hooper, born on 23 Dec. 1839 in Bridgewater,[170] mar­ried James Fisher Leach, son of Caleb and Elizabeth (Lincoln) Leach, of Bridgewater,[171] on 3 Oct. 1858 in Taunton, MA.[172] He was born on 15 May 1835 in Bridgewater.[173] They were living with her parents in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1860 federal census,[174] and the 1865 state census,[175] where he was a farmer, and her widowed mother was living with them in Bridgewater in the 1870,[176] and 1880 federal censuses.[177] They were still living in Bridgewater in the 1900 federal census.[178] He died on 5 Aug. 1900 in Bridgewater, aged 65 years, 4 months,[179] and she died a widow on 17 May 1916 in Bridgewater, aged 76 years, 4 months, 23 days, of “senectus[180]

 

 

(1266.) Eunice6 Washburn, third daughter of (426) Benjamin5 Washburn (Jr.), (126) Capt. Benjamin4, (58) Samuel3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, MA, on 5 Sept. 1753,[181] married Asa5 Rich­mond, of Taunton, son of Stephen4 and Silence (Robinson) Richmond,[182] on 28 Nov. 1782 in Bridgewater.[183] He was born ca. 1755, probably in Taunton,[184] a grandson of John3 and Hannah (Otis) Richmond (3rd),[185] and of Ebenezer and Mary (Williams) Robinson.[186] He served aboard a privateer during the Revolutionary War, and took part in the capture of a British ship, as well as serving on the Brig “Hazard” under Capt. John F. Williams.[187] Asa Richmond was men­tioned in the will of Stephen Richmond, of Taunton, dated 8 Jan. 1801, and probated on 29 Mar. 1802, and he was named as a co-executor of his father’s estate.[188] They were living in Taunton, MA, in the 1790,[189] 1800,[190] 1810,[191] 1820,[192] and 1830 federal censuses.[193] He died testate on 6 Nov. 1834 in Taunton,[194] his will dated 20 May 1830, and probated on 8 May 1835, mentioned his wife Eunice, unmarried daughter Lucinda, and son Asa Richmond, whom he named as executor of his estate.[195] (See Appendix [B] for a full transcription of his will.) She was living in Taunton with their son Asa Richmond in the 1840 federal census,[196] and she died on 3 Feb. 1842 in Taunton,[197] but no probate records were filed for her estate.

        Eunice Washburn and Asa Richmond had two chil­dren:

        3201     i   Lucinda6 Richmond, born on 26 Aug. 1783 in Taunton,[198] never mar­ried. She was still unmarried in 1830 when her father wrote his will, she was living in Taunton, MA, with her brother, Asa Richmond, in the 1850 federal census,[199] and the 1855 state census,[200] and with Jefferson and Sarah Leonard in Taunton in the 1860 federal census.[201] She supposedly died on 3 Dec. 1868 in Taunton, aged 85 years, but no probate records were filed for her estate.

        3202    ii   Asa6 Richmond (Jr.), born on 16 July 1787 in Taunton,[202] never married. He was living in Taunton, MA, in the 1840, where his mother was still living with him,[203] the 1850 federal censuses,[204] and the 1855 state census,[205] where he was a farmer, and his sister Lucinda Richmond was living with him. He died testate on 8 Jan. 1859 in Taunton, aged 71 years, of “liver complaint,”[206] his will dated 15 Jan. 1856, and probated on 4 Nov. 1859, mentioned his only sister Lucinda Richmond, and Jefferson Leonard, whom he named as executor of his estate.[207] (See Appendix [C] for a full transcription of his will.)

 

 

(1268.) Joshua6 Washburn, second son of (426) Benjamin5 Washburn (Jr.), (126) Capt. Benjamin4, (58) Samuel3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, MA, on 24 Sept. 1759,[208] married Lovice “Lucy” Rickard/Records on 2 Mar. 1786 in Bridgewater.[209] She was born on 16 Feb. 1763,[210] and they lived in Bridgewater, MA. He was not a head of household in Plymouth Co., MA, in the 1790 federal census, but he was living in Plymouth County in the 1800 federal census,[211] in the South Parish of Bridgewater, MA, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[212] and in Bridgewater in the 1830 federal census.[213] On 13 Jan. 1785 Benjamin Washburn, of Bridgewater, housewright, sold 41 acres of his homestead land in Bridgewater to Joshua Washburn for $164,[214] and Joshua Washburn was executor of his father’s estate in 1812. On 16 Dec. 1800 Joshua Washburn and Andrew Conant, both of Bridgewater, purchased a tract of 32 acres of swamp and upland in Bridgewater and Titicut from Jeremiah Wilbor and Lemuel Wilbor for $320.87.[215]

        “Lavicy” Washburn, wife of Joshua, died on 11 Dec. 1831 in Bridge­water, aged 68 “last Feb. 16th[216] and Joshua Washburn died intestate on 14 May 1832 in Bridgewater, aged 72 years, of “old age,”[217] and they were both buried in Conant Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA. Cornelius Holmes, Jr., of Bridgewater, was granted administration of his estate on 5 June 1832, his inventory was presented on 3 July 1832, his estate was declared insolvent. Claims against the estate were owed to $968.40 to Joshua Washburn, $781.26 owed to Benjamin Washburn, and $443 owed to Eunice Washburn. His estate was finally settled on 2 Apr. 1833.[218] On 25 Dec. 1832 Cornelius Holmes Jr., as administrator of the estate of Joshua Washburn, late of Bridgewater, sold to Joshua Washburn (Jr.), of Bridgewater, the 22 acre homestead in Bridgewater for $1187.47, to raise the money to pay the estate's debts.[219]

        Joshua Washburn and Lovice Rickard had children:

Macey Hall, of Raynham, in 1807.[221] He apparently died by 1818, but no probate records were filed for his estate in Plymouth or Bristol Co., MA, and she remarried to 2.) Sion/Sihon Swift, son of Jireh and Lucy (Keith) Swift, of Bridgewater,[222] on 23 Jan. 1818 in Bridgewater.[223] He was born ca. 1790 in MA,[224] and they were living in the South Parish of Bridgewater, MA, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[225] and in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1830 federal census.[226] Sihon Swift served as a private in Lt. Col. Caleb Howard’s Plymouth County Regiment of Massachusetts Militia during the War of 1812.[227] Susanna (Washburn) (Hall) Swift supposedly died in 1833, and he was an “insane,” living in Bridgewater in the 1850 federal census, with the family of Susanna’s cousin, (3200) Levi and Fanny Hooper.[228] In the 1855 state census he was a pauper living in the Alms House in Bridge­water.[229] He died a widower on 15 Feb. 1856 in Bridgewater, aged 68 years, of “disease of heart,”[230] but no pro­bate re­cords were found for either Sion or Susanna Swift in Plym­outh County. Susanna Washburn possibly had a daughter by Macey Hall, and she had at least one son by Sion Swift:

a. (Possibly) Lovisa W. Hall, born ca. 1808 in MA,[231] was probably still unmarried and living with her mother and step-father in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1830 federal census, married Quartus Snell, of East Bridgewater, as his second wife, on 19 Jan. 1836 in Bridgewater.[232] He was born ca. 1802 in MA,[233] and had married first to Sarah Shaw in 1832,[234] who died on 5 Feb. 1834 in East Bridgewater, aged 22 years, “by clothes taking fire.”[235] They were living in Charleston, Orleans Co., VT, in the 1840,[236] and 1850 federal censuses, where he was a farmer.[237] She died on 29 Aug. 1854, aged 46 years,[238] and was buried in Bly Cemetery in Orleans Co., VT. He was not found in the 1860 federal census.

b. George Washington Swift, born on 8 July 1818 in Bridgewater,[239] died on 12 Apr. 1825 in Bridgewater, aged 6 years, of “quincy[240] and was buried in the Old Graveyard in Bridgewater.

She died on 30 Sept. 1853 in New Bedford, aged 51 years, of “consumption,”[249] and he was still living in New Bedford, MA, in the 1855 state census, where he was a housewright,[250] and the 1860 federal census, where he was a carpenter,[251] and he was living with his son Frederick A. Washburn in New Bedford in the 1870 federal census.[252] He died a widower on 13 Apr. 1876 in New Bedford, aged 86 years, of “old age,”[253] and they were both buried in Rural Cemetery in New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA. June 1827 in Newport, RI.[257] He died on 19 Mar. 1883, aged 55 years, 9 months,[258] and she died a widow on 7 Oct. 1908 in New Bedford, aged 84 years, of “general arterio sclerosis,”[259] and they were both buried in Rural Cemetery in New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA.

b. Mary8 Gifford Washburn, born on 24 Oct. 1826 in New Bedford,[260] never married. She was still unmarried and living with her widowed father in New Bedford, MA, in the 1855 state census and the 1860 federal census, but she was not found in the 1870 federal census. She died unmarried on 19 July 1906 in New Bedford, aged 79 years, 8 months, 25 days, of “general arterio sclerosis,”[261] and was buried in Rural Cemetery in New Bedford, MA.

c. Lucy8 Merritt Washburn, born on 12 Oct. 1830 in New Bedford,[262] never married. She was still unmarried and living with her widowed father in New Bedford, MA, in the 1855 state census and the 1860 federal census, and she was living with her widowed father in the household of her brother Frederick A. Washburn in New Bedford in the 1870 federal census.[263] She died unmarried on 27 June 1903 in New Bedford, aged 72 years, 8 months, 15 days, of epilepsy,[264] and was buried in Rural Cemetery in New Bedford, MA.

Frederic8 “Fred” Augustus Washburn, born on 5 Jan. 1834 in New Bedford,[265] was still unmarried and living with his widowed father in New Bedford, MA, in the 1855 state census, where he was a mariner, and the 1860 federal census, where he was a bank teller, mar­ried Mary Jane Swan, daughter of Perez Wheeler and Almeda Ann (Shurtleff) Swan,[266] on 12 Sept. 1864.[267] She was born on 25 Mar. 1842 in Cincinnatus, NY.[268] They were living in New Bedford, Bristol Co., MA, in the 1870 federal census, where he was a cashier, and his widowed father and sister Lucy M. Washburn were living with them,[269] and in the 1880 federal census, where he was the assistant treasurer at a savings bank,[270] and they were still living in New Bedford, MA, in the 1900 federal census.[271] He died on 23 Jan. 1908 in New Bedford, aged 74 years, of “cerebral hemorrhage,”[272] and she died a widow on 15 Feb. 1917 in New Bedford, aged 74 years, 10 months, 20 days, of “arterio sclerosis & myocarditis,”[273] and they were both buried in Rural Cemetery in New Bedford, MA. Dr. Frederic9 Augustus Washburn (Jr.), born on 22 Nov. 1869 in New Bedford,[280] was a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston in 1908,[281] married Amy Silsbee Appleton.[282] She was born on 4 Mar. 1881 in Boston.[283] He died on 20 Aug. 1949 in Boston, aged 79 years,[284] and she died on 30 July 1960 in Boston, aged 79 years,[285] and they were both buried in Snow Cemetery in Truro, Barnstable Co., MA.

Charles9 Swan Washburn, born on 16 Nov. 1873 in New Bedford,[286] was still unmarried and living with his parents in New Bedford in the 1900 federal census, a cotton broker, married Bessie Clifton Gould.[287] She was born on 11 Feb. 1876 in Chilmark, Dukes Co., MA.[288] He died on 6 Nov. 1944, aged 70 years,[289] and she died on 2 Mar. 1965 in New Bedford, aged 89 years,[290] and they were both buried in Rural Cemetery in New Bedford, MA.

5. Ethel9 Allerton Washburn, born in Dec. 1883 in New Bedford,[291] married Arthur Clinton Swift, son of Arthur D. and Sarah Heard (Lowe) Swift,[292] on 9 Sept. 1907 in New Bedford.[293] He was born on 31 Oct. 1881 in New Bedford.[294]

On 29 Jan. 1833 Joshua Washburn of Bridgewater sold to his brother Benjamin Washburn of Bridgewater, part of the homestead farm of his father Joshua Washburn for $300,[299] and on 16 June 1840 Joshua Washburn, of Bridgewater, sold to Hiram Wentworth, of Bridgewater, cordwainer, 15 acres of his homestead farm in Bridgewater, with wife Charity Washburn releasing her right of dower.[300] They were living in Bridgewater in the 1840 federal census, where he was a farmer.[301] She died on ca. 11 Dec. 1847 in Bridgewater,[302] and he was living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer, and probably his sister Eunice was living with him.[303] He remarried to 2.) Harriet Robbins, daughter of Consider and Abigail (Bartlett) Robbins,[304] on 24 Dec. 1851 in Bridgewater.[305] She was born on 29 Dec. 1793 in Carver,[306] they were living in Bridgewater in the 1855 state census, where their future son-in-law was living with them,[307] and the 1860 federal census.[308] Joshua Washburn (Jr.) died on 26 Feb. 1865 in Bridgewater, aged 73 years, 2 months, of “dropsy,”[309] but no probate records were filed for his estate in Plymouth County. Harriet Washburn was a widow living in Bridgewater in the 1865 state census with the family of her step-daughter, Louisa and John V. Dyke, and she was living in the almshouse in Bridgewater in the 1870 federal census.[310] She died a widow on 31 July 1876 in Bridgewater, aged 83 years, 7 months, of “dropsy.”[311] Joshua Washburn (Jr.) had one daugh­ter by Chari­ty Wil­liams:

a. Lovisa8 “Louisa” K. Washburn, born on ca. 20 May 1837 in Bridgewater, MA,[312] married John V. Dyke, of Bridgewater, daughter of Thomas and Phoebe (Keith) Dyke,[313] on 8 June 1856 in Bridgewater.[314] He was born in 1832 in Braintree, MA.[315] He was a shoemaker living at the farm of Joshua Washburn in the 1855 state census,[316] they were living with his father in Bridgewater in the 1860 federal census,[317] they were living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1865 census, where her step-mother Harriet Wash­burn was living with them,[318] and they were still living in Bridgewater in the 1870 federal census, where he was working in a shoe factory,[319] and in the 1880 federal census.[320] John V. Dyke, of Bridgewater, was also mentioned in the 1880 will of Lovisa’s father’s cousin, (3212) Olive Conant. He died on 28 Jan. 1894 in Bridgewater, aged 61 years, 3 months, 22 days, of “consumption,”[321] and she died a widow on 4 Dec. 1898 in Bridgewater, aged 61 years, 6 months, 14 days, of “gastritis and catarrhal enteritis.”[322] They had chil­dren:

        3207   iv   Benjamin7 Washburn, born on 30 Apr. 1796 in Bridgewater,[327] married Charity Fuller, possi­bly daughter of William and Tabitha (Benson) Fuller,[328] on 7 Feb. 1836 in Bridgewater.[329] She was born on 20 May 1805 in Bridgewater.[330] They were living in Bridgewater in the 1840 federal census, where he was a farmer,[331] the 1850 federal census, where he was a laborer,[332] the 1855 state census, next door to the widow Tabitha Fuller, where he was a farmer,[333] the 1860 federal census, where he was a laborer and a pauper,[334] and in the 1865 state census­, where he was a farmer.[335] Benjamin Washburn died on 11 Nov. 1867 in Bridgewater, aged 71 years, 7 months, 11 days, of “chronic diahrea[336] but no probate records were filed for his estate. His widow Charity Washburn was still living in Bridgewater in the 1870,[337] and 1880 federal censuses,[338] and she died on 22 Apr. 1886 in Bridgewater, aged 80 years,[339] and they were both buried in Hillside Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA. They had two daugh­ters:

a. Mary8 Washburn, born on 2 Dec. 1837 in Bridgewater,[340] never married. She was still unmarried and living with her parents in Bridgewater in the 1860 federal census, a shoe fitter, but she was not listed in her parents’ household in the 1865 state census in Bridgewater. She was living in the household of Hiram H. White in Bridgewater in the 1870 federal census, where she was keeping house,[341] and the 1880 federal census, where she was insane.[342] She and her sister Laura Washburn were living together in Bridgewater in the 1900 federal census.[343] She died on 5 Dec. 1907 in Bridgewater, aged 70 years, of pneumonia,[344] and was buried in Hillside Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA.

b. Laura8 Washburn, born on 3 May 1840 in Bridgewater,[345] never married. She was still unmar­ried and living with her parents in Bridgewater in the 1860 federal census, a shoe fitter, and the 1865 state census, a “straw braid­er,” and with the family of Charles and Sarah W. Hayward in Bridgewater in the 1870 federal census,[346] and with her widowed mother in Bridgewater in the 1880 federal census.[347] She and her sister Mary Washburn were living together in Bridgewater in the 1900 federal census.[348] She died on 15 Aug. 1903 in Bridgewater, aged 63 years, of tuberculosis,[349] and was buried in Hillside Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA.

        3208    v   Isaac7 Washburn, born on 13 July 1799 in Bridgewater,[350] moved to Abington, MA,[351] then to Randolph, Norfolk Co., MA, and married Abigail J. Littlefield on 17 May 1827 in Randolph, MA.[352] She was born ca. 1793 in MA.[353] They were living in Randolph, Norfolk Co., MA, in the 1830 federal census.[354] He died on 24 Sept. 1838 in Randolph (now Holbrook), MA, aged 39 years,[355] but no probate records were filed for his estate in Norfolk Co., MA. She was still living in Randolph, MA, in the 1840,[356] and 1850 federal censuses,[357] the 1855 state census,[358] and the 1860 federal census.[359] She died on 26 June 1862 in Randolph, MA, aged 69 years, of “consumption,”[360] and they were both buried in Union Cemetery in Holbrook, Norfolk Co., MA, but no probate records were filed for her estate in Norfolk Co., MA, either. They had one son:

George8 Washburn, born ca. 1828 in Randolph, MA,[361] was still unmarried and living with his widowed mother in Randolph, MA, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a boot maker, the 1855 state census, and the 1860 federal census, where he was a boot cutter. He enlisted in the Civil War, and was killed on 19 July 1863 in Brashear City, LA, aged 35 years,[362] and was buried in Union Cemetery in Holbrook, Norfolk Co., MA, but no probate records were filed for his estate in Norfolk Co., MA.

        3209   vi   Eunice7 Washburn, born on 4 Nov. 1801 in Bridgewater,[363] married Deacon Warren Hunt, of Canton, Norfolk Co., MA, as his second wife, on 28 Oct. 1835 in Bridge­water.[364] He was born on 15 Feb. 1805 in Canton, MA,[365] and had married first to Ruth Dickerman on 14 July 1831.[366] They were living in Randolph, Norfolk Co., MA, in the 1840 federal census,[367] and he died intestate on 16 Dec. 1845 in Randolph, MA, of “consumption,” aged 41 [sic] years.[368] His widow Eunice Hunt was granted administration of his estate on 27 Dec. 1845, with Zenas French and Charles French, both of Randolph, as sureties.[369] She was not found in the 1850 federal census, but she was living in Bridgewater, MA, with Leander Fobes in the 1855 state census.[370] She died a widow on 2 July 1856 in Bridgewater, aged 54 years, of “consumption.”[371] Eunice (Washburn) Hunt probably had no children, but Warren Hunt had at least one son by Ruth Dickerman:

a. Charles W. Hunt, born on 29 Mar. 1834 in Randolph (now Holbrook), MA,[372] a minor in 1845 when his father died, Zenas French, of Randolph, was appointed as his special guardian in May 1846 in right of his father’s estate.[373] He married Bethiah J. Leach, daughter of Elbridge and Deborah Howland (Josselyn) Leach,[374] on 12 Aug. 1858 in North Bridgewater, MA.[375] She was born on 16 Feb. 1838 in North Bridgewater.[376] He served in Company C in the 48th Massachusetts Regiment during the Civil War.[377] They were living in Duxbury, Plymouth Co., MA, in the 1880 federal census, where he was a shoemaker,[378] and the 1900 federal census, where he was a farm laborer.[379] He died on 6 Apr. 1912 in Duxbury, MA, aged 78 years, 7 days, of “chronic cystitis,”[380] and she died on 22 June 1927, aged 89 years,[381] they were both buried in Mayflower Cemetery in Duxbury, MA.

        3210  vii   Charles7 Washburn, born on 7 Mar. 1807 in Bridgewater,[383] probably married Eliza­beth Holmes, daughter of Tilden and Eunice (Bearse) Holmes, of Kingston, MA,[384] on 24 Dec. 1833 in Kingston.[385] She was born on 28 Sept. 1804 in Kingston,[386] a grand­daughter of Ephraim and Zerviah4 (Bryant) Holmes (Jr.), of Kingston.[387] They probably had no children. They were living in Kingston in the 1850 federal census, with her uncle, Stephen Holmes, where he was a shoemaker,[388] but they had no children at the time, in the house of Nancy Everson in Kingston in the 1855 state census,[389] with her uncle Stephen Holmes in Kingston in the 1860 federal census,[390] and in Kingston in the 1865 state census,[391] and the 1870 federal census.[392] Charles Washburn died intes­tate on 22 Jan. 1880 in Boston, MA, aged 73 years, of “hypostatic pneumonia,” his residence listed as the Eye & Ear Infirmary in Kingston,[393] and her brother Joseph Holmes was ap­pointed as adminis­tra­tor of his estate on 14 June 1880, with Edward D. Chandler and Joseph S. Beal, of Kingston, as sureties, and his real estate was sold in 1881.[394] No death record was found for Elizabeth (Holmes) Washburn in Kingston.

Benjamin4, (58) Samuel3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, MA, on 16 Oct. 1769,[395] married Andrew7 Conant, son of Nathaniel6 and Silence5 (Fobes) Conant,[396] on 1 Nov. 1795 in Bridgewater.[397] He was born on 25 Mar. 1774 in Bridgewater,[398] a grandson of Jeremiah5 and Martha (Packard) Conant, and of Ephraim4 and (585) Susanna4 (Wil­lis) Fobes (Jr.)[399] He served as a private from Bridgewater in Capt. Isaac Keith’s Company, Lt. Col. Caleb Howard’s Plymouth County Regiment of Massachusetts Militia in Plymouth County during the War of 1812.[400] They were living in the South Parish of Bridgewater, MA, in the 1820 federal census,[401] in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1830,[402] and 1840 federal censuses,[403] and next door to his sisters Susannah and Silence Conant in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1850 federal census,[404] where he was a farmer.

        Keziah (Washburn) Conant died on 30 Sept. 1851 in Bridgewater, MA, aged 82 years, of “old age,”[405] and Andrew Conant was living in Bridgewater in the 1855 state census, a farmer.[406] He died testate on 2 Jan. 1858 in Bridgewater, aged 84 years, of “sudden-palsy,”[407] and they were both buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA, his will dated 2 Oct. 1848, with a codicil dated 8 Sept. 1855, and probated in Feb. 1858, mentioned his wife Keziah Conant, his son Thomas Jefferson Conant, his son Andrew Conant, his grandson Andrew Conant, son of Jeremiah Conant, deceased, and other children of Jeremiah, and his daughter Olive Conant, and he named his son Andrew Conant as executor of his estate.[408] (See Appendix [D] for a full transcription of his will.)

She was living in Hinds Co., MS, in the 1850 federal census, where she was a farmer,[412] but she was not found in the 1860 federal census. They had children:

a. Oscar9 F. Conant, born ca. 1829 in MS,[413] mentioned in the 1880 will of his aunt Olive Conant, of Bridgewater, and was called her only heir at law in the 1886 probate of her will. He was called “insane” and living in the almshouse in Bridgewater in the 1870 federal census, where the widow of his father’s cousin Joshua Washburn (Jr.) was also living,[414] and he was presumably the Oscar Conant living with Esek H. and Adeline Randall in Cranston, Providence Co., RI, in the 1880 federal census, where he was a laborer.[415] He died on 27 Jan. 1895,[416] and was buried in North Burial Ground in Providence, RI.

b. Rebecca Conant, born ca. 1834 in MS,[417] died before the 1880 will of her aunt Olive Conant of Bridgewater, MA.

c. Andrew M. Conant, born ca. 1838 in MS,[418] mentioned in the 1848 will of his grandfather, Andrew Conant, but he died before the 1880 will of his aunt Olive Conant, of Bridgewater, MA.[419]

        3212    ii   Olive8 Conant, born on 10 Aug. 1801 in Bridgewater,[420] never married. She was still unmar­ried and living in Bridgewater with her parents in the 1850 federal census,[421] with her widowed father in the 1855 state cen­sus,[422] and with her brothers Thomas and Andrew Conant (Jr.), in the 1865 state census.[423] She was the executrix of the estate of her brother Andrew Conant in 1879. She died testate on 8 Apr. 1886 in Bridgewater, aged 84 years, 8 months, of “old age,”[424] and was buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA. Her will, dated 3 June 1880, named Philander Leach as executor and trustee of her bequest to her nephew Oscar F. Conant of Providence, RI, during his lifetime, John V. Dyke, of Bridgewater, and Linus W. Snow, of Bridgewater, whom she named as her residual heir for the support and maintenance of her brother Thomas Jefferson Conant. Philander Leach was appointed as executor on 10 May 1886, with Linus W. Snow of Bridgewater and James E. Leach of Boston as sureties. He died by 1898, and Hosea Kingman, of Bridgewater, was appointed successor trustee of the bequest to Oscar F. Conant of Providence on 10 Oct. 1898, but he died by 1900, and Paul O. Clark, of Bridgewater, was appointed as successor trustee on 14 May 1900.[425] (See Appendix [E] for a full transcription of her will.)

        3213   iii   Thomas8 Jefferson Conant, born on 21 Mar. 1806 in Bridgewater,[426] never married. He was still unmar­ried and living in Bridgewater with his parents in the 1850 federal census,[427] with his widowed father in the 1855 state census,[428] and in the 1865 state census with his brother, Andrew, a farmer,[429] and his father made arrangements for his brother Andrew Conant to care for him in his 1848 will. He died on 6 Feb. 1885 in Bridgewater, aged 78 years, 10 months, 15 days, of heart disease,[430] and was buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA, but no probate records were filed for his estate.

        3214   iv   Andrew8 Conant (Jr.), born on 26 Nov. 1808 in Bridgewater,[431] never married. He was still unmar­ried and living in Bridgewater with his parents in the 1850 federal census,[432] with his widowed father in the 1855 state census,[433] and with his brother Thomas Conant in the 1865 state census, a farmer.[434] He was executor of his father’s estate in 1858, and he died testate on 25 Jan. 1879 in Bridgewater, aged 70 years, 2 months, of “ossification of arteries,”[435] and was buried in Vernon Street Cemetery in Bridgewater, MA. His will was dated 19 Oct. 1866, and probated on 10 Mar. 1879, left his entire estate to his sister Olive Conant, whom he named as executrix of his estate, but also mentioned his brother Thomas J. Conant, and the unnamed children of his deceased brother Jeremiah Conant.[436] (See Appendix [F] for a full transcription of his will.)

  Be it remembered that I James Hooper of Bridgewater in the County of Plymouth, Gentleman being weak in body, and calling to mind the uncertainty of life, and through the blessing of God of sound mind and memory, do this twenty second day of Sept in the year of our Lord One thousand eight hundred & twenty eight, make and publish this my last Will & Testament, that is to say. In the first place I give to my well beloved Wife Susannah the use and improvement of all my household Furniture and one half of all my Real Estate including One half of all my buildings and two good Cows, & four sheep and a sufficient quantity of Wood delivered at the door, cut and prepared for use sufficient to support one fire at all times, during her life.

        I give and bequeath unto my son Isaac One hundred dollars, payable in one year after my decease, and all my wearing apparel, and my will is that all the securities and demands of every description which I have against him shall be cancelled and given up at my decease~

        I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary a right to live in, and improve such part of my Dwelling house and out buildings and privileges connected therewith as are necessary for her comfort and convenience during her life – and also a right to use fruit from the Orchard and Garden and a sufficient quantity of wood cut and delivered fit for use to support one fire, and after the decease of her mother, the improvement of one good Cow to be kept the year round for that purpose, out of my Estate during her life. I also give her Four hundred dollars, payable at my decease, I also give her my said Daughter Mary together with my two daughters Susannah and Azubah all my household furniture, except my Desk, to be equally divided between them after the decease of their Mother.     I also give to my two Daughters Susannah & Azubah, One hundred Dollars each payable in one year after the decease of their Mother—

        Lastly, I give and devise to my son Levi Hooper his heirs and assigns all my Estate both Real & Personal not before disposed of, subject however to the payment of my debts and legacies aforesaid, and the conditions of delivering Firewood for his Mother during her life, and after her the keeping of one Cow, and delivery of Firewood for his sister Mary, as above described

  And I do hereby constitute and appoint my said son Levi sole Executor of this my last Will & Testament. And my Will is that my Wife Susannah together with my Daughter Mary have the use of my Horse & Chaise to ride when convenient and necessary for their comfort.    In testimony whereof I do hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year abovewritten—

Viz. In the first place I direct my Son Asa to find a home and to maintain my beloved wife Eunice in Sickness and in health during her natural life I do also give my daughter Lucinda one Good bed and beding, one case of drawers two decent tables and eight decent chairs – I also direct my said Son Asa – to give my Said Daughter Lucinda a good maintainance in Sickness and in health while She remains a Single woman

and Lastly – I give to my said Son Asa all the rest and residue of my Real and personal Estate of every Discreption, & to his heirs and assigns for ever and I Do hereby appoint my Sd. Son Asa Sole Executor of this my last Will and testament revoking all former wills made by me

[D] The Will and Codicil of Andrew Conant of Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Commonwealth of Massachusetts (1848) *

                Know all men by these presents, that I, Andrew Conant, of Bridgewater, in the County of Plymouth, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, being of sound mind and memory, do make and declare this my last Will and Testament, in manner and form as follows,

                First, I give and bequeath unto my well beloved wife Keziah Conant, a good, comfortable and sufficient support and maintenance during her natural life.

                Second, I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Jefferson Conant, a good and comfortable support, during his natural life.

                Third, I give and bequeath unto my son Andrew Conant, and to his heirs and assigns, a certain lot of woodland, situated in Halifax, containing twenty six acres, more or less, which I purchased of David Alden Jr. & Silas Hall & their wives. Also a certain lot of wood land, situated in the Westerly part of Bridgewater, containing thirty two acres more or less, which I bought of Jeremiah and Samuel Wilbar, and Eli K. Washburn.

                Fourth. – I give and bequeath unto my grandson, Andrew Conant, son of Jeremiah Conant, deceased, one hundred dollars, to be paid in one year after my decease. Having assisted my son, Jeremiah Conant, deceased, during his lifetime, I make no legacies to the other children of said Jeremiah.

                Fifth. I give and bequeath unto my said son Andrew Conant, and to my daughter Olive Conant, and to their heirs, in equal moieties, all the residue and remainder of my estate, of which I shall die seized and possessed, or to which I shall be entitled, after the payment of my just debts, and funeral charges, and supporting my wife and my son Thomas Jefferson Conant, during their natural lives, as is herein provided. Provided however, that if either the said Andrew, or the said Olive shall die without issue, of their bodies begotten, then the whole of this Legacy shall revert and enure to the survivor of them, and his or her heirs and assigns

                And provided also, that if the said Olive shall marry that she shall receive, in lieu of the aforesaid legacy, the sum of five hundred dollars, and the remainder of the same to go to said Andrew & his heirs.

                I hereby appoint my son, Andrew Conant the sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking and annulling all former wills by me made.

                In witness whereof, I, the said Andrew Conant have hereunto set my hand and seal, this second day of October, one thousand eight hundred and forty eight.

                I Olive Conant of Bridgewater do make & declare this my last Will & Testament.

1              I give to Philander Leach of Bridgewater ($2000) two thousand dollars to be held in trust as follows:- The income thereof & so much of the principal thereof as may be necessary in the judgement of the Trustee to be applied annually to & for the support & maintenance of my nephew Oscar F. Conant of Providence R.I. during his life & on his death to pay over said fund then unexpended to the residuary Legatee in this Will to be held in fee simple

2              I give to John V. Dyke of said Bridgewater the sum of ($1000) one thousand dollars.

3              I give devise & bequeath to Linus W. Snow of said Bridgewater all the rest, residue & remainder of my Estate real, personal & mixed

                To have & to hold the same to him his heirs and assigns forever, and this devise and bequest is made to said Snow upon the condition that He, his executors administrators Heirs and assigns shall support & maintain my brother Thomas Jefferson Conant during his life and I hereby charge this residuum with that duty

4              I appoint Philander Leach of said Bridgewater Executor of this Will.

                In witness whereof, I the said Olive Conant have hereto set my hand this third day of June in the year of our Lord Eighteen Hundred & Eighty.

Hosea Kingman, of Bridgewater, was appointed as successor trustee of the bequest to Oscar F. Conant of Providence in the will of Olive Conant, late of Bridgewater, on 10 Oct. 1898, Philander Leach, the named trustee, having since died.

 

Paul O. Clark, of Bridgewater, was appointed as successor trustee of the bequest to Oscar F. Conant of Providence in the will of Olive Conant, late of Bridgewater, on 14 May 1900, Philander Leach, the named trustee, having since died, and Hosea Kingman appointed to succeed said Leach having also since deceased.

I give devise and bequeath to my sister Olive Conant all my estate, real personal and mixed, of every kind and sort, wheresoever situated, and of which I may die seized and possessed. To have and to hold the same to said Oliver her heirs and assigns forever.

I make no provision for, or bequest to my brother Thomas J. Conant, or to the children or issue of my brother Jeremiah Conant, deceased, leaving it entirely with my sister, the said Olive, to do as she pleases with my estate herein given to her.

  I appoint my sister the said Olive Conant Executrix of this will.

  In witness whereof I the said Andrew Conant have hereto set my hand this nineteenth day of October in the year eighteen hundred and sixty six.
