The Descendants of William Jasper Wallace and Sarah Eunice Washburn

(VIII) William8 “Billy” Jasper Wallace, second son of (VII) Joseph7 and Priscilla (Edwards) Wallace, was born in Autauga Co., AL, on 26 Nov. 1829,[1] moved with his family from Alabama to Mississippi in ca. 1839,[2] then to Anderson Co., Texas, by 1849,[3] where he left in about 1852 for the California gold fields.[4] He was a true Wild West pioneer, suffering all the hardships and scars of the rugged western life. He was known as “Uncle Billy” to his friends and neighbors.

William J. Wallace eventually ended up in Mariposa Co., CA, where he was a rancher and miner. He married Sarah Eunice Washburn, daughter of Alfred Finney and Eunice Wheat (Maxwell) Washburn,[5] on 22 June 1865 in Catheys Valley, Mariposa Co., CA, by Rev. I. C. Pendergrast.[6] She was almost 17 years younger than him, born on 5 Oct. 1846 in New Orleans, LA,[7] a granddaughter of Dr. Hercules and Sarah (Evarts) Washburn, of Georgia, Franklin Co., VT, and of Sylvanus and Eunice Wright (Wheat) Maxwell, of Heath, Franklin Co., MA.[8] Her mother had died of yellow fever in New Orleans in Aug. 1847, while she was an infant, and she had been raised by her father’s sister, Sarah Amelia (Washburn) Tiffey, in King George Co., VA. Her father had come to California by ship from New Orleans in 1849, which arrived in San Francisco in March or April of 1850, and had established himself as a lawyer in Mariposa, CA, by 1858.[9] Sarah Eunice Washburn had attempted to trace her family history while living with her aunt in Virginia, and, with the help of her paternal grandmother’s nephew and Alfred Finney Washburn’s cousin, William Maxwell Evarts, a prominent New York City Lawyer who was a strong supporter of President Abraham Lincoln, and was later U.S. Attorney General and U.S. Secretary of State, she was able to obtain permission signed by President Lincoln to pass through the Union lines from her home in Virginia in 1862, and came to California by wagon train.[10]

William J. and Sarah E. Wallace purchased the Round Hill Ranch in Catheys Valley, Mariposa Co., CA, where he raised livestock and was engaged in the mining of iron ore and quartz. In the 1870 federal census they were living in Mariposa Co., CA, where he was listed as a quartz miner,[11] and he was a farmer in Catheys Valley, Mariposa Co., CA, in the 1880 federal census.[12] W. J. Wallace served on a grand jury in Mariposa Co., CA, in Nov. 1877.[13]

In a letter from Sarah E. Wallace to his younger brother, Benjamin F. Wallace, in Texas, dated 7 Aug. 1878 in Catheys Valley, Mariposa Co., CA, she described the rough conditions of life in California, the hard labor and very low wages, separation from friends and loved ones, and difficulty paying their debts.[14]

In about 1892 William J. Wallace purchased a home in Fresno, CA, where Sarah moved, where the schools were better and life was not quite so hard. Sometime before 1900 they were divorced, and she moved again to Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co., CA, by the ocean, to escape the valley heat and malaria.[15] She was living in Santa Cruz, CA, in the 1900 federal census, with their children Frank, Andy, Lew and Jean Wallace, and two grandchildren,[16] while he remained at the ranch in Catheys Valley, Mariposa Co., CA, with sons Charles and William Wallace.[17] William Jasper Wallace finally sold the Round Hill Ranch in about 1903, and he died on 4 Dec. 1905 in Fresno, CA, aged 76 years, at the home of his son, Alex Wallace.[18] He was buried in the I.O.O.F. Section of the Mariposa Cemetery in Mariposa, CA,[19] next to the grave of his father-in-law, Alfred F. Washburn. He had never returned to Texas to see his family there, but his son Andy, and daughter Eunice, kept in contact with their relatives there, and even visited them once or twice.[20] Sarah Eunice (Washburn) Wallace remarried to a family friend, William Henry Hopkins, on 5 Oct. 1909 in Alameda Co., CA.[21] He was born ca. 1860 in IL.[22] They were living in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA, in the 1910 federal census, where he was a house painter.[23] She died on 16 Jan. 1911 in Fitchburg, East Oakland, CA, aged 64 years,[24] and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA, on 30 Jan. 1911.[25] William H. (IX) Dr. Andy9 Cathey Wallace, fourth son of (VIII) William8 Jasper Wallace, (VII) Joseph7 Wallace, was born in Catheys Valley, CA, on 15 July 1877,[219] attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons Dental School in San Francisco, and set up his own dental office there, with his brother, Lew Wallace. He was attending dental school in San Francisco when the 1906 earthquake hit and leveled much of the city. The building they held their practice in was damaged and condemned, and he had to sneak back in to the building at night to retrieve their dental tools.[220]

Dr. Andy C. Wallace married 1.) Emma “Emmy” Charlotte Bendewald on 9 Mar. 1910 in San Francisco.[221] She was born on 13 July 1886 in CA,[222] and was described by Harriet Rogers as a “strong German woman, who didn’t like Eunice, and didn’t associate with the Wallaces, and would hardly allow Andy to visit with his brothers’ and sisters’ families, except at Christmas.” Emmy’s side of the story was that she “hated having to haul the children by streetcar across town every Sunday to visit Andy’s family.”[223] “When Harriet Rogers was to be married in 1926, Andy wanted to go to the wedding, but Emma said ‘no.’ Andy said he was going anyway, and Emma said that if he went he wasn’t to come back. Andy said ‘fine,’ and went to the wedding.”[224] Andy and Emma Wallace were living in San Francisco, CA, in the 1910,[225] and 1920 federal censuses,[226] where he was a dentist. They were divorced in ca. 1926, and she moved to San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA, with the three boys where they lived near San Jose State College.[227] He was living alone in San Francisco, CA, in the 1930 federal census, where he was a dentist,[228] and she was living with her children in Fremont, Santa Clara Co., CA, in the 1930 federal census,[229] and in San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA, in the 1940 federal census.[230] Andy remarried to 2.) Emily Ellen “Ella” Weakley on 27 June 1931 in Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., CA,[231] but he had no children by his second wife. She was born on 14 June 1890 in Crains Island, Randolph Co., IL,[232] and they were still living in San Francisco, CA, in the 1940 federal census.[233]

Dr. Andy Wallace and his brother, Dr. Lew Wallace, both had good dental practices in San Francisco, before the days of Novocain, when it required a real skill to painlessly drill patients’ teeth.[234] He retired to Los Altos, Santa Clara Co., CA, to a small house on 2 acres of fruit trees, where he raised apricots, plums, figs, peaches, cherries, and some vegetables. His second wife, Ella, “put up” the preserves. He smoked only good Havana cigars, until Fidel Castro took over Cuba, and President John F. Kennedy stopped the importation of Cuban tobacco, when Andy Wallace decided he’d rather stop smoking than smoke American cigars.[235] Ella Wallace died on 13 June 1962 in Los Altos, Santa Clara Co., CA, aged 71 years,[236] and he died on 19 Nov. 1966 in Los Altos, CA, aged 89 years,[237] and they were both buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, Alameda Co., CA. His first wife, Emma Charlotte (Bendewald) Wallace, died on 7 July 1971 in Santa Clara Co., CA, aged 84 years,[238] and was buried in Olivet Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo Co., CA.

Dr. Andy C. Wallace and Emma Charlotte Bendewald had four sons:[239]

            A. Warren10 Louis Wallace, born on 2 Aug. 1911 in San Francisco, CA,[240] died on 13 Feb. 1930 in Santa Clara Co., CA, aged 18 years, 6 months, 11 days,[241] and was buried in Olivet Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo Co., CA. He was described as “a cowboy kind of kid, had a horse and was pretty easy going,” and became the man of the family when his parents were divorced.[242]

            B. (Another son who lived less than a week.)[243]

            C. Vernon10 Andrew Wallace, born on 9 Jan. 1916 in San Francisco,[244] changed his name to Vernon Arden Wallace, and married Alice Elizabeth Fernandez, daughter of Pascasio and Wendala (Anderson) Fernandez, of New York City,[245] on 18 Nov. 1956 in New York.[246] She was born on 19 Sept. 1919 in New York City.[247] He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, and was a professor and administrator at San Francisco State University. He died on 16 Mar. 2001 in San Francisco, aged 85 years,[248] and she died on 3 June 2007, aged 87 years,[249] and they were both buried in Olivet Memorial Park in Colma, San Mateo Co., CA. They adopted two children.[250]

            D. Kenneth10 Noel Wallace, born on 25 Dec. 1918 in San Francisco,[251] married Rosamond Louise Praisewater, daughter of George Clifton and Dorothy (Dillon) Praisewater,[252] on 15 Aug. 1953 in San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA.[253] She was born on 29 June 1933.[254] He served in the U.S. Army from 1841-1945, during World War II, and worked as a writer in Hollywood, before settling in San Jose, CA.[255] He then worked as a teacher in English and Drama at Campbell High School in California for 10 years, then as a counselor at Del Mar and Blackford High Schools in San Jose.[256] He died on 14 Nov. 2011 in San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA, aged 92 years, of bone cancer,[257] and she died on 27 Nov. 2015, aged 82 years,[258] and they were both buried in Los Gatos Memorial Park in San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA. They had four children.[259]
