Per Harriet (Rogers) Lee. His name was listed as “Andrew” Wallace in the 1880
federal census, but Andy always insisted it was just Andy. Andrew Cathey
was the pioneer who had first founded Catheys Valley in Mariposa County.
[220]
Andy Wallace used to delight in telling the story that when the earthquake hit,
he had left his prized dental instruments and equipment in the school, which
was damaged in the earthquake. The National Guardsmen had a “shoot to kill”
order to keep the looters out of the buildings, and Andy managed to evade
detection climbing a back wall of his school and slipping into a second story
window to retrieve his possessions.
