Family of
Part II
(VII.) William3
James Maltby, sixth son of Thomas2 Maltby, Thomas1 Baker, Capt. ThomasA, JohnB Jr., JohnC, WilliamD; born in Newcastle, New Brunswick, on 13 Dec. 1849,
married 1.) Sophia Morrell, of Newcastle,[1] in ca. 1874.[2] She was born ca. 1850 in
New Brunswick,[3] the daughter of David and Sophia H. Morrell, of Newcastle, who had a
daughter Sophia, aged 11, in the 1861 Canadian Census.[4] David Morrell may have been
a son of Hugh Morell, the first Newcastle
Postmaster, who had come to New Brunswick from Ireland around 1826, by his
wife, Margaret Ross, who had remained behind in
Ireland.[5]
In the 1881 Canadian Census William and Sophia Maltby
were living in Newcastle, where he was a carpenter, and her widowed father,
David Morell, was living with them.[6] William J. Maltby was
elected to the vestry of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Newcastle, in 1880,
1885, and 1886.[7]
Sophia Maltby died in Dec. 1883 in Newcastle, and was
buried from St. Andrew’s Church on 26 Dec. 1883, aged 33 years.[8] William James Maltby
remarried to 2.) Margaret Lowerie, daughter of Walter and Sarah (Morrell)
Lowerie, of Newcastle,[9] in ca. 1886. She was born
on 1 Jan. 1854 in NB.[10] In the 1891 Canadian Census
William and Margaret Maltby were living in Newcastle, where he was a carpenter,
and both David Morell and Margaret’s widowed mother, Sarah Lowerie, were living
with them.[11] Curiously, by 1891 William
had become a Presbyterian. He died on 4 Dec. 1898,[12] presumably in Newcastle. In
the 1901 Canadian Census, “Mrs. W. Maltby” was still living in Newcastle, a
widow, with only her sons Ernest and Walter, and daughter Maud.[13] She died on 10 Jan. 1946,
aged 92 years.[14]
William James Maltby had 5 sons by Sophia Morrell and 3
more children by Margaret Lowerie:[15]
A. Benjamin4 Freeman Maltby, born on 17 Apr. 1875 in
Newcastle, married 1.) Clara “Carrie”
Christina Matheson, daughter of Charles and Margaret (Stephenson) Matheson, of Newcastle,[16]

She was born ca. 1872,[18]
and died on 29 Oct. 1918 in Newcastle, aged 46 years,[19]
of influenza. He remarried to 2.) Susan Irene Holt, daughter of Samuel and Catherine (Shields) Holt, of Holtville, NB,[20]
on 14 May 1919 in Northumberland Co., NB.[21]
She was a nurse. He died on 8 Feb. 1951 in Northumberland Co., NB,[22]
and she probably died in 1954, presumably in Miramichi, Northumberland Co., NB.
In the 1901 Canadian Census Benjamin Maltby was unmarried, working as a
Tinsmith, and living in the family of J. Haley and Euphimia Phinney, in Newcastle.[23]
Benjamin F. Maltby lived in Newcastle, where
he was engaged in the tinware, plumbing and heating, and appliance business
with his son, William C. Maltby. Hamilton’s biographical sketch of him says that he
“learned the tinsmithing trade from J. Haley Phinney, and founded the B.F.
Maltby Co., a plumbing and heating firm in Newcastle, in 1904. In 1906 he was
advertising stoves of all types for sale and plumbing and heating installations
and repairs. For many years his was the principal business of its kind in the
town. In 1949, in partnership with his son W. C. Maltby, he bought A.C. McLean & Sons, the largest plumbing and heating
firm in Chatham. The business was still operating under B.F. Maltby’s name
thirty years after his death.”[24]
He was also the Fire Chief in 1917. Hamilton continues, “Maltby was a member of
Newcastle’s volunteer fire brigade for many years and was named chief in 1917,
as successor to Charles M. Dickison. He was both a member of
the Presbyterian-United Church and a supporter of the Salvation Army. His
second wife, Susan I. Holt, was with the Red Cross Service in World War I. She
was later a member and an honorary life member of the Miramichi Hospital
Board.”[25]

Stothart, he inherited Stothart Mercantile Company in Newcastle from his father,[30] and he died in 1974.[31] They had 3 sons.
2. William5 “Bud” Charles Maltby, born on 22 Sept. 1908 in Newcastle,[32] was in the plumbing, heating, and appliance business with his father, married late in life, but had no children of his own.[33] He was still living in Miramichi, NB, in 2001.

Hamilton, Willis D., Old North Esk Revised, pp. 173, 214-215, 225-226,
535-536; Hamilton, Miramichi Dictionary, pp. 193,
334, and with addition research by Elizabeth Macaluso. Frederick John Jones,
born on 19 Oct. 1850 in Jones’ Crossing, NB, was the son of John and Grace
(Russell) Jones, and he married first to Jane Keating, daughter of Patrick and
Margaret (Hutchison) Keating, who was born in Jan. 1852 in Whitney, NB,
and died 6 Jan. 1885, age the age of 33. Frederick Jones remarried to Margaret
Goodfellow, daughter of John and Alice Jane (Williston) Goodfellow, who was
born on 21 Aug. 1868. Frederick Jones died 20 Apr. 1894, aged 43 years, and his
widow remarried to Justus A. McKay. She died in 1932, aged 63 years. The wife of
Frederick Jones found in the birth records of Bessie Jones’ sisters Mabel and
Henrietta Jones from the on-line New Brunswick Birth Record Archives, from
Northumberland County CD 9, Book 3, P. 2, #400, found at https://www.gov.nb.ca/scripts/supply/archives/govrecs/rssd/100s/141/141a2-2/index.asp,
was Margaret Goodfellow, so they must have been sisters of Bessie Jones.
Hamilton says that John Jones came from Camborne, Cornwall, England, the son of
a John and
Elizabeth Jones; Grace Russell was a
sister of the Presbyterian missionary Samuel Russell, and was daughter of James and Ann
(Carruthers) Russell, of Ireland; Patrick Keating was a
native of Ireland, and came to New Brunswick in 1827; and Margaret Hutchison was a
daughter of James Hutchison, a Presbyterian, who came to New Brunswick
from Scotland in 1818, and his wife Judith Murphy, who was Catholic. Elizabeth Macaluso,
however, disagrees that the parents of Frederick Jones were John Jones and Elizabeth
Rowe, however these may have been Frederick’s
grandparents. Williston, Descendants of John Bailey Williston, p. 31-32,
shows the parents of Margaret Goodfellow as John Williston Goodfellow and Alice
Jane Goodfellow, who were married in South Esk, NB, on 14 Sept. 1857, and on p.
8 that the parents of John Williston Goodfellow were John Goodfellow and Mary
Williston, daughter of John Bailey Williston.
