Laird Family of
(IV.) Nathaniel4 Laird, son of James3
Laird, Capt. David2, James1; born in Kentucky on
8 Mar. 1818,[1] married Mary Ann Herron, daughter of William and Martha
“Patsy” (Thomasson) (Berry) Herron (Jr.), of Hopkins Co., KY,[2] on 18 Nov. 1839 in Hopkins Co., KY,[3] and they moved from Hopkins Co., KY, to Chariton
Co., MO, where his brothers David and John Laird had settled a few years
earlier. She was born in ca. 1820,[4] a granddaughter of William and Mary
Herron, of Hopkins Co., KY.[5]
Nathaniel
Laird first appears along with his father in the 1842 tax list in Hopkins Co.,
KY, taxed for 2 parcels of land on Deer Creek for 200 acres and 300 acres and 5
slaves.[6] In the 1843 Hopkins County tax list, Nathaniel
Laird was taxed for 2 parcels of land on Deer Creek, of 205 acres and 174 acres
and 5 slaves, but his father was shown with no land, only 1 slave.[7] In the 1844 Hopkins County tax list, the last on
the microfilm, Nathaniel Laird was taxed for 205 acres on Deer Creek, and his
father for 217 acres and 5 slaves.[8] In 1846 Nathaniel Laird donated 2˝
acres of land on Deer Creek to the United Baptist Church, and in 1848-1849 he sold several parcels of his
land on Deer Creek to Jacob Van Hook,[9] Washington Chandler,[10] James Couch Jr.,[11] Matthew Harris,[12] and William H. Puryear.[13] I did not find Nathaniel and Mary Ann Laird in
the 1850 federal census in either Kentucky or Missouri, but they presumably
moved to Missouri in about 1849.
Nathaniel
Laird died on 12 Nov. 1850 in
Lexington, MO,[14] and Mary Ann (Herron) Laird possibly remarried
to a (___) Green[15] after 1856.[16] On 12 June 1851 Mary Ann Laird, widow of
Nathaniel Laird, gave a power of attorney to David H. Thomason to sell her
portion of her inheritance from her father’s estate in Kentucky. On 4 Mar. 1853
Patsy P. Herron, widow of William Herron, deceased, William T. Herron, of Union Co., KY, Mary Ann Laird and John S.
Herron, of Clinton Co., MO, Patsey Lisman and James
Lisman, her husband, of Chariton Co., MO[17], and David N. Herron, of Hopkins Co., KY, sold 202 acres of land on
the Crab Orchard fork of the Tradewater River in Hopkins Co., KY, to George
Yarbrough,[18] and in 1854 Mary A. Laird sold part of her
interest in Nathaniel Laird’s estate on Deer Creek in Hopkins Co., KY, to
Robert Green. In 1856 Mary Laird and her sons David Laird,
Joseph Laird, John L. Laird, and William Laird, sold the remaining land of the
estate of Nathaniel Laird to Burrel S. Ruby,[19] Thomas C. Clayton,[20] and Lysander G. Gordon.[21] She was not found in Chariton Co., Missouri in
