Families of the Children of Abigail5 Washburn and John Freelove

Tracing the families of Abigail Washburn’s son John Freelove (Jr.) has been a very difficult task, and most of the research has been done by Linda R. F. Arnold, of Menifee, California. This is still a work in progress, and it will be added to as new information is discovered.

(1016.) Abigail Freelove, second daughter of (370) Abigail5 Washburn, (113) William4, (56) John3 (6th), (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Freetown, MA, on 16 July 1740,[1] married Ebenezer Whitman, of East Bridgewater, son of Nicholas and Mary (Conant) Whitman,[2] on 21 Nov. 1760 in Bridgewater.[3] He was born on 6 Dec. 1736 in Bridgewater.[4] Ebenezer Whitman died on 11 Feb. 1786 in East Bridgewater, aged 49 years, of a fever.[5] Abigail (Freelove) Whitman died on 1 Mar. 1786 in East Bridgewater, aged 45 years, also of a fever.[6] No probate records were filed for either of their estates in Plymouth County.

Abigail Freelove and Ebenezer Whitman had children:[7]

        2680     i   Abigail “Nabby” Whitman, born on 10 July 1763 in Bridgewater,[8] never married.[9]

2681    ii   Ebenezer Whitman (Jr.), born on 20 June 1765 in Bridgewater,[10] married Lydia Whitman, daughter of Deacon John and Lydia (Snow) Whitman,[11] on 7 Oct. 1788 in Bridgewater,[12] and moved to Windsor, Berkshire Co., MA,[13] after 1790. She was born on 29 July 1765 in Bridgewater,[14] and they were living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1790 federal census.[15] She died on 18 Feb. 1826 in Windsor, MA, aged 60 years, of “dropsey,”[16] and he died on 4 Nov. 1849 in Windsor, MA, aged 84 years, of old age.[17]

2682   iii   Jepthah Whitman, born on 19 Apr. 1767 in Bridgewater,[18] married Betsey Tinkham, daughter of Isaac and Lucretia (Hammond) Tinkham,[19] of Middleborough, on 14 Apr. 1790 in Middleborough,[20] and they also moved to Windsor, Berkshire Co., MA,[21] after 1790. She was born on 7 July 1769 in Middleborough,[22] and they were living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1790 federal census.[23] She died on 14 Dec. 1844 in Windsor, MA, aged 76 years,[24] and he possibly died after 1850.

(1017.) John Freelove (Jr.), only son of (370) Abigail5 Washburn, (113) William4, (56) John3 (6th), (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Freetown, MA, on 4 Feb. 1741/2,[25] married 1.) Sarah5 Fuller, daughter of Isaac4 and Sarah4 (Packard) Fuller (Jr.),[26] on 24 Jan. 1765 in Bridgewater.[27] She was born on 23 Mar. 1746 in Bridgewater,[28] a granddaughter of Isaac3 and Mary (Pratt) Fuller,[29] and of Solomon3 and Susanna (Kingman) Packard.[30] He may have been the John Freelove who married secondly to Sarah Woods on 4 Jan. 1774 in Bridgewater,[31] but more likely that was a different John Freelove.[32] He served as a Private from Eaton in Capt. Jacob Haskins’s Light Infantry in 1775 and 1779-1780 during the Revolutionary War.[33] They probably lived initially in Easton, Bristol Co., MA, then moved to Winchester, Cheshire Co., NH, with her brother, Benjamin Fuller, by 1790.

John Freelove (Jr.) was living in Cheshire Co., NH, in the 1790,[34] and 1800 federal censuses.[35] They moved to Rutland Co., VT, by 1810. Sarah (Fuller) Freelove died by 1810, presumably in Rutland Co., VT, and he remarried to 2.) Bethiah (Emons) Tinkham, widow of Isaac Tinkham, in 1810 in Brandon, Rutland Co., VT.[36] In the 1810 federal census he was living in Brandon, Rutland Co., VT,[37] and he was probably living in Pittsford, Rutland Co., VT, in the 1820 federal census.[38] John Freelove (Jr.) presumably died in Vermont.

John Freelove (Jr.) had children, probably all by Sarah Fuller, order uncertain:

2683     i   Sarah Freelove, born ca. 1766,[39] married Oliver Waterman, son of Samuel and Mary4 (Fuller) Waterman, of Mansfield, MA,[40] on 1 Feb. 1786 in Mansfield.[41] He was born on 5 May 1760 in Halifax, MA,[42] a grandson of Robert and Mary4 (Cushman) Waterman,[43] and of Isaac3 and Mary (Pratt) Fuller,[44] and she was his first cousin once removed.[45] They were living in Mansfield, Bristol Co., MA, in the 1790 federal census,[46] apparently with children, but no children were recorded born to them in the vital records of Mansfield,[47] and they were living in Savoy, Berkshire Co., MA, in the 1800,[48] 1810,[49] and 1820 federal censuses, where he was a farmer.[50] On 28 May 1799 he purchased 80 acres of land in Savoy, MA, from Isaac and Mary Francis, of Savoy,[51] and he sold 40 acres of it to his son Oliver Waterman Jr. on 21 Apr. 1809.[52] On 14 Dec. 1812 Oliver Waterman sold 35 acres of the land to Joseph Williams and Liscom Philips.[53] Oliver Waterman and Oliver Waterman Jr. mortgaged the remaining 45 acres of land to William Ingraham and William Ingraham Jr. on 31 Dec. 1812,[54] and on 24 Apr. 1813 they repaid the mortgage to William Ingraham and William Ingraham Jr.,[55] and sold the 45 acres of the land to Philip Mason, of Adams, MA, on 26 Apr. 1813.[56] Sarah (Freelove) Waterman probably died before 1830,[57] and Oliver Waterman was still living in Savoy, Berkshire Co., MA, in the 1830 federal census.[58] He died on 5 Nov. 1833 in Savoy, Berkshire Co., MA,[59] but no probate records were filed for his estate. They had children:

a. Oliver Waterman (Jr.), born on 2 Aug. 1787 in Mansfield, MA,[60] married Mariam Jennings,[61] daughter of Ephraim and Mariam (Smith) Jennings, of Buckland, Hampshire Co., MA,[62] on 17 Jan. 1813 in Savoy, MA.[63] She was supposedly born on 31 May 1788 in Buckland, MA.[64] The will of Ephraim Jenings 2d, of Buckland, dated 2 Apr. 1803, and probated on 27 Sept. 1803, mentioned his wife Mariam and daughter Mariam Jenings, among others, and named his son John Jenings as executor of his estate.[65] On 3 Sept. 1803 Ira Jennings, Zera Jennings, and Meriam Jennings, minors above the age of 14 years, children of Mr. Ephraim Jennings, late of Buckland, chose Enos Smith, of Buckland, to be their guardian in right of their father’s estate.[66] Oliver Waterman Jr. purchased 40 acres of land from his father, Oliver Waterman, in Savoy, MA, on 21 Apr. 1809,[67] and they mortgaged their combined land to William Ingraham and William Ingraham Jr. on 31 Dec. 1812,[68] repaying the mortgage on 24 Apr. 1813.[69] Then on 26 Apr. 1813 they sold their 45 acres of the land to Philip Mason, of Adams, MA.[70] They were apparently still living with his parents in Savoy, Berkshire Co., MA, in the 1820 federal census, and they moved to Stockton, Chautauqua Co., NY. They were living in Stockton, Chautauqua Co., NY, in the 1830,[71] and 1840 federal censuses,[72] and in Le Boeuf, Erie Co., PA, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer,[73] but they were not found in the 1860 federal census. She supposedly died on 12 June 1863 in Mill Village, Erie Co., PA,[74] and he supposedly died on 27 Nov. 1864 in Chautauqua Co., NY, or in Erie Co., PA,[75] but no probate records were found for his estate.

b. Sarah Waterman, born on 20 Jan. 1790 in Mansfield, MA,[76] never married. She was head of the household in Savoy, Berkshire Co., MA, in the 1840 federal census, that probably included her sister Chloe and brothers Robert and Sylvanus.[77] She was a pauper living in Savoy, MA, in both the 1850 federal census,[78] and the 1855 state census,[79] where her brothers Robert and Sylvanus Waterman were living with her, and she was listed as a cripple and pauper in her brother Robert Waterman’s household in Savoy, MA, in the 1860 federal census. She died on 14 Apr. 1866 in Savoy, MA, aged 76 years, 2 months, 24 days, of “consumption,”[80] but no probate records were filed for her estate.

c. Chloe Waterman, born on 12 June 1797 in Mansfield,[81] never married, died on 2 Mar. 1850 in Savoy, MA, aged 52 years, 8 months, 20 days, of “consumption.”[82]

d. Robert Waterman, born on 15 Aug. 1800 in Savoy, MA,[83] never married. He was a laborer and a pauper living with his sister Sarah Waterman in Savoy, Berkshire Co., MA, in the 1850 federal census, and the 1855 state census, and he was still living in Savoy, MA, in the 1860 federal census, a cripple and a pauper.[84] He died on 8 Dec. 1863 in Savoy, MA, aged 63 years, 3 months, 23 days, of typhoid fever,[85] but no probate records were filed for his estate.

e. Sylvanus Waterman, born on 18 July 1804 in Savoy, MA,[86] never married. He was also a laborer and pauper living with his sister Sarah Waterman in Savoy, Berkshire Co., MA, in the 1850 federal census, and the 1855 state census. He died a cripple on 27 Feb. 1856 in Savoy, MA, aged 50 years, 5 months, of “consumption.”[87]

2684    ii   Benjamin Freelove, born say ca. 1770 in MA,[88] married Lucina “Luceney” Perry, of Winchester, Cheshire Co., NH, on 26 Mar. 1795 in Winchester, NH.[89] She was born in ca. 1774.[90] They were living in Monkton, Addison Co., VT, in the 1800 federal census, [91] in Starksboro, Addison Co., VT, in the 1810 federal census,[92] in Pittsford, Rutland Co., VT, in the 1820 federal census, where he was a farmer,[93] and in Hubbardton, Rutland Co., VT, in the 1830 federal census.[94] She died on 22 Aug. 1836 in Hubbardton, Rutland Co., VT, aged 62 years,[95] and was buried in Pleasant View Cemetery in Hubbardton, VT. He may have been the Benjamin Freelove living in Bloomfield, Crawford Co., PA, in the 1840 federal census,[96] and he supposedly died in ca. 1851, possibly in Rochester, Racine Co., WI,[97] but he was not found in the 1850 federal census.
