Families of the Children of Elisabeth4 Washburn and Elisha4 Hayward Jr.

The traceable children of Elisabeth Washburn and Elisha Hayward Jr. remained in the Bridgewater area of Plymouth County, but the names of all the grandchildren are probably incomplete. It appears that Caleb Hayward, presumably the youngest son, seems to have preferred the spelling “Howard” rather than “Hayward,” which has resulted in a little confusion for his descendants. I will add to his file as more information is uncovered, but the families of these children will not be carried further than this file.

(699.) Lt. Jesse5 Hayward, second son of (178) Elisabeth4 Washburn, (65) James3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); baptized in West Bridgewater, MA, on 28 Mar. 1742,[1] married Mary Harden, daughter of Abraham and Ruth4 (Perry) Harden, of Pembroke, MA,[2] on 27 Oct. 1763 in Bridgewater.[3] She was a granddaughter of Benjamin3 and Deborah (Johnson) Perry (Jr.), of Sandwich and Stoughton, MA.[4]

Jesse and Mary Hayward were living in Halifax, MA, in 1769, and in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1790 federal census,[5] but he was not listed as a head of household in Bridgewater in the 1800 federal census, and no death or probate records were found for either of them in Plymouth County.

Lt. Jesse Hayward and Mary Harden had least 2 sons:

2002     i   Oliver Hayward, born on 23 Jan. 1769 in Halifax,[6] marriage not found.

2003    ii   Jesse6 Hayward (Jr.), possibly born on 10 Oct. 1772,[7] married Sarah Hewitt, possibly daughter of Joseph and Ann (Waterman) Hewitt, of Marshfield,[8] in May 1793 in Kingston, MA.[9] She was born on 30 Nov. 1770 in Marshfield.[10] He was a mariner and cordwainer, and they lived in East Bridgewater, then supposedly moved to Ohio.[11] They had at least one son:

a. Hervey Hayward, born on 5 Aug. 1794,[12] marriage not found.

        2004   iii   (Probably others)[13]

(700.) Bettie5 Hayward, eldest daughter of (178) Elisabeth4 Washburn, (65) James3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); baptized in West Bridgewater on 29 Jan. 1744 in West Bridgewater,[14] married John5 Hayward, her first cousin, son of Jacob4 and Tabitha4 (Hayward) Hayward,[15] on 26 Nov. 1778 in West Bridgewater.[16] He was born on 21 Mar. 1744/5 in Bridgewater,[17] a grandson of Thomas3 and Susanna (Hayward) Hayward, and of Elisha3 and Experience (Harvey) Hayward.[18]

John and Bettie Hayward lived in Bridgewater, but the only John Hayward family living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1790 federal census does not appear to be the family of John and Bettie Hayward,[19] and he does not appear to have served in the Revolutionary War from Bridgewater. No death or probate records were found for either of them in Plymouth County.

Bettie Hayward and John Hayward had children:[20]

2005     i   Experience6 Hayward, born on 13 Aug. 1779 in Bridgewater,[21] married Rufus Crossman, of Kingston, MA, son of Otis and Prudence (Williams) Crossman, of Taunton,[22] as his second wife, on 10 June 1818 in Bridgewater,[23] and they settled in West Bridgewater, where he was a hatter. He was born on 15 Nov. 1794 in Taunton,[24] baptized on 2 Aug. 1807 in Taunton,[25] and his first wife, Betsey, died on 21 July 1817 in Kingston, aged 20 or 22 years, of “pleurisy.”[26] He died on 3 Nov. 1849 in West Bridgewater, of “pulmonary consumption,” aged 55 years,[27] but no probate records were filed for his estate. Experience (Hayward) Crossman was living with her son Jacob H. Crossman in West Bridgewater in the 1850 federal census, and in East Bridgewater in the 1855 state census. She possibly died by 1860, but no death record was found for her in Plymouth County. They had children:

a. Lucia Crossman, born on 23 Aug. 1819 in West Bridgewater,[28] died on 11 Oct. 1819 in West Bridgewater.[29]

b. Jacob Howard Crossman, born on 17 May 1821 in West Bridgewater,[30] baptized on 27 June 1830 in East Bridgewater,[31] married Abby Whitman, daughter of Eleazer and Nabby (Pratt) Whitman (Jr.), of East Bridgewater,[32] on 20 Oct. 1844 in East Bridgewater.[33] She was born on 12 Feb. 1823 in East Bridgewater,[34] and they lived in West Bridgewater, where he was called a shoemaker in their marriage record, a hatter in 1845, a railroad agent in 1847,[35] and in the 1850 federal census,[36] a merchant in the 1855 state census in East Bridgewater,[37] and a shoe dealer in the 1860 federal census in West Bridgewater.[38] He died on 30 July 1894 in East Bridgewater, aged 73 years, 2 months, 13 days, of “paralysis.”[39]

2006    ii   Jacob6 Hayward, born on 4 Feb. 1781 in Bridgewater,[40] married Abigail Willis, daughter of Jonah and Abigail (Hayward) Willis,[41] on 16 Sept. 1816 in Bridgewater.[42] She was born on 6 Aug. 1790 in Bridgewater,[43] and they probably lived in Kingston, MA. Children not found. He died by 1833, but no probate records were found for him, and she remarried to Alfred Whitman, of East Bridgewater, son of Deacon John and Abigail (Whitman) Whitman, as his second wife,[44] in 1833 in Kingston.[45] He was born on 30 Mar. 1781 in Bridgewater,[46] and was widower of Betsey (Robbins) Whitman.[47] Alfred Whitman died on 8 Aug. 1842 in East Bridgewater, aged 61 years, of “inflamation of the psoas muscle and consequent ulceration.”[48] Abigail (Willis) (Hayward) Whitman was not found in the 1850 federal census or the 1855 state census in East Bridgewater or Bridgewater, but she may have been the Abigail Whitman, widow, aged 74 years, living in Bridgewater with the family of Nathan Willis in the 1865 state census.[49] No death record was found for her.

2007   iii   Betty/Betsey6 Hayward, born on 21 Aug. 1782 in Bridgewater,[50] married Ebenezer Colwell (Jr.), son of Ebenezer and Sarah (Price) Colwell,[51] on 4 Sept. 1804 in Bridgewater.[52] He was born on 8 Nov. 1779 in Bridgewater.[53] Children not found. She apparently died by 1822, and he remarried to Elizabeth Bosworth, of Halifax, MA, on 8 Dec. 1822 in Halifax.[54] He died intestate on 8 Nov. 1842 in Middleborough, aged 64 years,[55] and his widow requested that Jabez P. Thompson, of Halifax, be appointed as administrator of his estate on 5 Dec. 1842.[56]

2008   iv   Molly6 Hayward, born on 25 Sept. 1784 in Bridgewater,[57] never married, died on 22 Aug. 1817 in Bridgewater,[58] but no probate records were found for her.

(701.) Caleb5 Hayward, probably youngest son of (178) Elisabeth4 Washburn, (65) James3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); baptized in West Bridgewater, MA, on 14 Sept. 1746,[59] married 1.) (___) Clark, of Plymouth,[60] and 2.) Persis Hayward on 28 Jan. 1773 in Bridgewater.[61] She was born ca. 1751.[62]

Caleb Hayward served in the Revolutionary War, as a private from Bridgewater in Capt. Josiah Hayden’s Company in 1775, then in Capt. Eliakim Howard’s Company from Bridgewater in 1778, in Capt. Jacob Allen’s Company at Valley Forge in Jan. 1778, in Capt. Adam Bailey’s Company in 1780, and was discharged in 1782.[63] His name was often spelled “Haward” or “Howard” in the records. They were living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1790 federal census,[64] and he may have been one of the two Caleb Howards living in Bridgewater in the 1800 federal census.[65]

Caleb “Howard” died intestate on 24 Nov. 1811 in East Bridgewater, of “consumption,”[66] and Isaac Alden 3d, of Bridgewater, yeoman, was granted administration of his estate on 7 Apr. 1812, with Abel Kingman, Esqr., and Lot Whitmarsh as sureties.[67] Persis (Hayward) “Haward” died a widow on 1 Mar. 1825 in East Bridgewater, aged 73 years,[68] but no probate records were filed for her estate.

Caleb Hayward supposedly had children, order uncertain:[69]

2009     i   Caleb Hayward (Jr.), marriage not found.[70] He was not found in the 1855 state census in East Bridgewater.

2010    ii   Lydia6 Hayward, born say ca. 1775,[71] married Nathan Richards, of South Bridgewater, on 24 Nov. 1813 in Bridgewater.[72] He was born ca. 1774.[73] Children not found. They were living in South Parish, Bridgewater, MA, in the 1820 federal census,[74] but it appears she had probably died before the 1830 federal census.[75] He was still living in Bridgewater, MA, in the 1840,[76] and 1850 federal censuses, and he was listed as blind by 1850.[77] He died on 12 Feb. 1852 in Bridgewater, aged 77 years,[78] but no probate records were filed for his estate.

2011   iii   Hannah6 Hayward, born on ca. 27 Aug. 1777 in East Bridgewater,[79] married Col. Jesse Reed, of Randolph, MA, son of Ezekiel and Mary (Rogers) Reed,[80] on 26 Oct. 1800 in Bridgewater.[81] He was born on 29 Aug. 1778 in Bridgewater.[82] She died on 29 Sept. 1848 in Marshfield, MA, aged 71 years, 1 month, 2 days, of dysentery,[83] and he remarried to Louisa Lindsey, daughter of James and Louisa Lindsey, of Abington, on 20 May 1851 in Marshfield.[84] He was still living in Marshfield, MA, in the 1850,[85] and 1860 federal censuses,[86] a machinist. He died testate on 22 Mar. 1867 in Marshfield, MA, aged 88 years, 6 months, 23 days, of “infirmities of age,”[87] his will dated 13 Feb. 1867, and probated on 18 Nov. 1867, mentioned his son Horatio G. Reed, daughter Ann M. Josselyn, unnamed grandchildren, wife Louisa Reed, daughter Mary L. Reed, and son Jesse Reed. He did not name an executor, so John Ford, of Marshfield, petitioned for administration with will annexed.[88] (See Appendix [A] for a full transcription of his will.) Louisa (Lindsey) Reed died a widow on 14 Oct. 1875 in Marshfield, aged 54 years, 3 months, of “consumption.”[89] Hannah (Hayward) Reed had 4 children:

a. Hannah Howard Reed, born ca. 1802,[90] married Martin McLauthlin, of Marshfield, son of Joseph and Jane “Jenny” (West) McLauthlin,[91] of Kingston and Pembroke, on 1 Dec. 1823 in Marshfield,[92] and they moved to East Bridgewater. He was baptized on 17 May 1801 in Kingston, MA.[93] She died on 15 Feb. 1844 in East Bridgewater, aged 41 years,[94] and he remarried to Lusanna McLaughlin, daughter of Elisha and Olive5 (Bryant) McLaughlin, of Kingston, in 1849.[95] She was born on 19 Mar. 1799 in Kingston.[96] They were living in East Bridgewater, MA, in the 1860 federal census, where he was a farmer.[97] He died testate on 14 Sept. 1860 in East Bridgewater, aged 59 years, 10 months, of “apoplexy,”[98] his will dated 3 Feb. 1858, and probated on the first Tuesday of Oct. 1860, mentioned his wife Lusanna, sons Martin P. McLauthlin and George T. McLauthlin, and daughters Hannah R. Richards, wife of John Richards, of West Bridgewater, and Mary W. Carlton, wife of George H. Carlton, of East Bridgewater, and he named his sons Martin P. and George T. as executors of his estate.[99] (See Appendix [B] for a full transcription of his will.) Lusanna (McLaughlin) McLauthlin died intestate in ca. 1874 in East Bridgewater, and Alden S. Bradford, of Kingston, was granted administration of her estate on 23 Feb. 1874.[100]

b. Horatio Gates Reed, born on 25 Oct. 1805 in North Bridgewater,[101] married Welthea Walker, daughter of Asa and Abigail (Baker) Walker, of Marshfield,[102] on 23 Apr. 1826 in Marshfield,[103] and they lived in Scituate, MA, where he was a civil engineer. She was born on 28 Nov. 1802 in Marshfield.[104] They were living in Scituate, Plymouth Co., MA, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a machinist,[105] and in the 1860 federal census, where he was a civil engineer.[106] He was mentioned in the 1867 will of his father. He died testate on 26 July 1880 in Scituate, aged 74 years, 9 months, 1 day, of “heart disease,”[107] his will dated 27 Feb. 1865, and probated on 23 Aug. 1880, left his entire estate to his wife Welthea W. Reed, whom he named as Executrix of his estate, and mentioned his children Horatio G. H. Reed, Marian W. Vinal, Ellen L. Webb, and Mary F. Reed.[108] (See Appendix [C] for a full transcription of his will.) She died a widow on 4 Feb. 1883 in Scituate, aged 79 years, 2 months, of “paralysis.”[109]

c. Ann Matilda Reed, born supposedly on 16 Apr. 1811 in Marshfield,[110] married Charles Walker, son of Asa and Abigail (Baker) Walker, of Marshfield,[111] on 23 Mar. 1829 in Marshfield.[112] He was born on 30 Aug. 1800 in Marshfield.[113] They were living in Marshfield, MA, in the 1850 federal census, where he was a tack manufacturer.[114] He died intestate on 26 Sept. 1852 in Marshfield, aged 53 years, of “erysipelas,”[115] and his widow Ann M. Walker, was granted administration of his estate on 30 Nov. 1852.[116] She was still living in Marshfield, MA, in the 1860 federal census,[117] and she remarried to Henry E. G. Josselyn, of Marshfield, son of Stockbridge and Sarah (Bell) Josselyn,[118] as his second wife, on 27 Nov. 1862 in Marshfield.[119] He died on 12 Sept. 1865 in Marshfield, aged 68 years, 9 months, 9 days, of “consumption,”[120] but no probate records were filed for his estate. She died a widow, testate, on 22 Dec. 1872 in Marshfield, aged 61 years, 9 months, of “consumption,”[121] her will dated 17 Dec. 1872, and probated on 13 Jan. 1873, mentioned her oldest daughter Matilda A. W. Damon, son Charles H. Walker, and daughter Almeda W. Ewell, and she named her son Charles H. Walker as executor of her estate.[122] (See Appendix [D] for a full transcription of her will.)

d. Harriet N. Reed, born say ca. 1812 in Hanover, MA,[123] married Joseph Palmer Parsons, of Marshfield, son of Moses and Rachel Parsons, of Scituate, on 25 Nov. 1832 in Marshfield.[124] He was born on 15 Oct. 1809 in Scituate,[125] and died intestate on 30 Sept. 1844 in Marshfield, aged 36 years, of “languishment from ulcers on limbs.”[126] His widow Harriet N. Parsons, of Marshfield, was granted administration of his estate on 14 Apr. 1845, with John Ford, of Marshfield, and Benjamin Alden, of Duxbury, as sureties.[127] She was living with her father in Marshfield in the 1850 federal census, and she died a widow on 3 Sept. 1851 in Marshfield, of “malformation.”[128]

Col. Jesse Reed had 3 more children by Louisa Lindsey:

e. Mary Louisa Reed, born on 9 Aug. 1853 in Marshfield,[129] was still unmarried in 1867 when her father wrote his will, married William Wilson, of Boston, son of Joseph H. and Martha T. Wilson, on 27 Nov. 1873 in Marshfield.[130] He was born ca. 1845 in Salem, MA.[131]
