Families of the Children of James4 Washburn (Jr.) and Elisabeth Leonard

Only three of the sons of James Washburn (Jr.) and Elisabeth Leonard can be traced. Reuben, the eldest son, lived probably in the Titicut part of the south precinct of Bridgewater; Simeon, the second son, lived west in Attleborough, and then in Keene, New Hampshire; Ebenezer, the third son, possibly lived in Rhode Island, but no children have been found for him; and Jonah, the youngest son, lived in Middleborough, and then in Randolph, Vermont. Mary, the only surviving daughter of James Washburn (Jr.), married, and eventually moved to Woodstock, Vermont. The children of Elisabeth Leonard by her second husband, Joseph Crossman, are not traced here, and can be found listed in the sketch of James Washburn (Jr.)’s family.

(657.) Reuben5 Washburn, eldest son of (172) James4 Washburn (Jr.), (65) James3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born in Bridgewater, MA, in 1721, married 1.) Abigail Murrey in ca. 1744,[1] but she apparently died by 1749, and he remarried to 2.) Betty Dilley/Dellis on 11 May 1749 in Bridgewater.[2] The parents of both his wives have not yet been discovered, and neither wife appears to have been from a local family.

Reuben Washburn sold to his cousin Cornelius Washburn a 15-acre lot of land in South Bridgewater adjoining Cornelius’ land on 22 Mar. 1744,[3] and no wife co-signed the deed, so he was probably still unmarried on that date. Reuben and Betty (Dilley) Washburn sold their homestead in Bridgewater to Seth Hayward on 31 Aug. 1749,[4] and settled in Middleborough, MA. Reuben and Betty Washburn were written of several times in the diary of Rev Isaac Backus, of Titicut Parish, North Middleborough, where Reuben allowed his house to be used as a gathering place on several occasions, but he never joined the church himself.[5]

Reuben Washburn died in Middleborough in ca. 1757, but no death or probate records were filed for his estate in Plymouth County. On 30 June 1757 Betty Washburn, widow, was admitted to full communion in Rev. Isaac Backus’ church in North Middleborough.[6] Reuben Washburn’s brother, Jonah Washburn, was appointed as guardian of Ruben Washburn, of Middleborough, a minor son of Ruben Washburn, of Middleborough, deceased, on 5 Feb. 1759, evidently a son by his first wife, Abigail Murrey, because he was old enough to witness a deed of his uncle, Jonah Washburn, on 19 Aug. 1865.[7]

Betty (Dilley) Washburn remarried to Seth5 Billington, son of Isaac4 and Mary (Dunham) Billington (Jr.), of Middleborough,[8] as his second wife, on 15 Jan. 1765 in Middleborough.[9] Seth Billington was born on 11 May 1735 in Middleborough,[10] and was widower of Deborah (Smith) Billington,[11] who died on 22 July 1762 in Middleborough, aged 25 years.[12] Betty (Dilley) (Washburn) Billington again allowed Rev. Isaac Backus to preach in their house on at least two more occasions.[13]

Seth Billington moved to Pelham, Hampshire Co., MA, before 1782, and he died testate in 1783 in Pelham.[14] His will was dated 13 July 1782 in Pelham, and probated on 21 Oct. 1783. He mentioned his wife, Betty, and his son John Billington, his daughter “Lidey” Weston, and his son Frederick, under 21, but none of Reuben Washburn’s children.[15] Betty (Dilley) (Washburn) Billington moved to Rutland, Rutland Co., VT, where she was living next door to her son, Frederick Billington, in the 1800 federal census,[16] but neither Betty nor Frederick Billington were listed as head of household in Massachusetts or Vermont in the 1790 federal census. She was probably the female aged 45 or over in the household of Frederick Billington in Rutland, VT, in the 1810 federal census.[17]

Reuben Washburn probably had one son by Abigail Murrey, and 3 more children by Betty Dilley:

1861     i   Reuben6 Washburn (Jr.), born ca. 1744,[18] probably in Bridgewater. His uncle, Jonah Washburn, of Middleborough, was appointed as guardian of Ruben Washburn, a minor son of Ruben Washburn, of Middleborough, deceased, on 5 Feb. 1759,[19] and he married Meriah5 Holmes, daughter of Jabez4 and Sarah (Clarke) Holmes, of Plymouth,[20] on 19 Nov. 1767 in Plymouth.[21] She was born on 20 Feb. 1745/6 in Plymouth,[22] a granddaughter of Elisha3 and Sarah3 (Bartlett) Holmes.[23] They lived in Plymouth, where he was a tanner, but he did not purchase any land in Plymouth. He died on 10 Oct. 1775 in Plymouth,[24] and she moved up to Woodstock, Windsor Co., VT. In Jan. 1798 Meriah Washburn, widow, of Woodstock, VT, signed a quit claim to her brother-in-law, Lemuel Leach, for all her rights in the estate of her father, Jabez Holmes, in Plymouth.[25] She was not a head of household in Vermont in the 1800 or 1810 federal censuses, but she died in the 1813 influenza epidemic in Reading, VT,[26] although no probate records were filed for her estate in Windsor Co., VT.[27] They had two sons, one of whom died young:

a. George7 Washburn, born ca. 1772 in Plymouth,[28] as a minor over the age of 14 years he chose John Soule, of Middleborough, as his guardian on 4 Dec. 1786, which was approved on 5 Feb. 1787,[29] and he was possibly the George Washburn who married Polly Hoisington, daughter of John Smith and Elizabeth (Emerson) Hoisington,[30] on 12 Nov. 1813 in Bridgewater, Windsor Co., VT.[31] They supposedly had children:[32]

1. Warren Washburn

2. Dustin Washburn

3. Lucy Washburn

b. (Unnamed son), died on 11 Dec. 1775 in Plymouth.[33]

1862    ii   (Unnamed child), died on 18 July 1750 in Bridgewater.[34]

+      1863   iii   Sgt. Seth6 Washburn, born on 2 Aug. 1751 in Middleborough,[35] married (1728) Elisabeth Dunbar, daughter of James and (531) Hannah4 (Benson) Dunbar (Jr.), on 21 July 1772 in Bridgewater,[36] and they moved to Woodstock, Windsor Co., VT. (To be continued in Washburn Sixth Generation.)

+      1864   iv   Sgt. Isaiah6 Washburn, born on 27 Nov. 1754 in Middleborough,[37] married Priscilla Wood, daughter of Silas and Priscilla (Cobb) Wood, of Middleborough,[38] on 20 July 1775 in Middleborough.[39] (To be continued in Washburn Sixth Generation.)

Betty Dilley also had a son by Seth Billington:

1865    v   Frederick6 Billington, born on 3 June 1769 in Middleborough,[40] was unmarried and living in Rutland, Rutland Co., VT, in the 1800 federal census,[41] but was not a head of household in Massachusetts or Vermont in the 1790 federal census. He was apparently married and living in Rutland, VT, in the 1810 federal census,[42] but he was not a head of household in Rutland, VT, in the 1820 or 1830 federal censuses.

(658.) Simeon5 Washburn, probably second son of (172) James4 Washburn (Jr.), (65) James3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born, say 1725, married Jemima Gary, daughter of Stephen and Mercy (Gilbert) Gary, of Taunton,[43] in ca. 1746.[44] She was a granddaughter of Eleazer and Elizabeth2 (Crane) Gilbert, of Taunton,[45] and a great-granddaughter of Henry1 and Tabitha (Kinsley) Crane.[46] On 4 May 1717 Stephen Gary and his wife Mercy signed a receipt for her share of the estate of her father, Eleazer Gilbert, of Taunton, to her “father in law” [stepfather] George Townsen and mother Elizabeth Townsen, administrators of the estate of Eleazer Gilbert.[47]

The will of Stephen Gary, of Taunton, “labourer,” dated 2 Feb. 1749/50, and probated on 12 Feb. 1749/50, mentioned, among others, his daughter Jemima.[48] Simeon Washburn, of Attleborough, and wife Jemima, signed receipt for legacy from the estate of her father, Stephen Gary, of Taunton, on 23 Mar. 1756.[49]

On 10 Dec. 1751 Simeon Washburn purchased land in Attleborough from Timothy Martin, and from Jeremiah Fisher,[50] and Simeon and Jemima Washburn settled in Attleborough, Bristol Co., MA. They may have lived near the border with Rehoboth. Their children’s births were recorded in Rehoboth, with the exception of the first son Simeon, with a note saying “the first 8 of this family born in Attleboro,” and were baptized in the Second Congregational Church in Attleborough, with the exception of daughter Jemima, and those who probably died in infancy. On 9 Mar. 1762 Simeon Washburn purchased land in Rehoboth, MA, from Henry Joslin Jr.,[51] on 9 June 1762 he purchased land in Rehoboth from Amos Brown,[52] and on 18 Aug. 1764 he purchased land in Taunton from Seth Gary.[53] Simeon Washburn sold his land in Attleborough to Obadiah Carpenter on 24 May 1762.[54] He sold land in Rehoboth to David Perry on 10 Mar. 1763,[55] and to Daniel Perry on 16 Mar. 1764,[56] sold his land in Taunton on 31 Aug. 1764 to Aaron Pratt,[57] and he sold land in Rehoboth to Joshua Briggs Jr. on 31 Oct. 1765.[58] He also sold land in Rehoboth to William Dryer Jr. on 29 Nov. 1774.[59] Eventually Simeon and Jemima Washburn moved to Keene, Cheshire Co., NH. He was not a head of household in Massachusetts or New Hampshire in the 1790 federal census, but he was probably the Simeon Washburn living in Cheshire Co., NH, in the 1800 federal census.[60]

On 16 June 1780 Ebenezer Wheelock was paid $258 by James Claghorn, Commissioner for the Sale of Confiscated Estates of Vermont, for 2 days service including expenses, in search of the mother of Ebenezer Washburn. Wheelock rode from Springfield, VT, to Keene, NH, in order to obtain the deed to the confiscated land of Washburn in Rutland, VT, which was thought to have been kept by the mother of Ebenezer Washburn.[61] Simeon Washburn died on 27 Oct. 1802 in Keene, NH, and Jemima (Gary) Washburn died on 11 Nov. 1804 in Keene, NH.[62]

Simeon Washburn and Jemima Gary had children:

1866     i   Simeon Washburn (Jr.), baptized in Jan. 1746/7 in Attleborough,[63] died in Jan. 1746/7 in Attleborough.[64]

+      1867    ii   Martha6 Washburn, born on 5 or 25 Dec. 1747 in Attleborough,[65] married Nathaniel Briggs, son of Corp. John and Lydia (Finney) Briggs (Jr.), of Norton, MA,[66] on 31 July 1766 in Norton.[67] (To be continued in Washburn Sixth Generation.)

+      1868   iii   Daniel6 Washburn, born on 23 Nov. 1749 in Attleborough,[68] baptized on 8 Apr. 1750 in Attleborough,[69] possibly married Jerusha Foster, and moved to Vermont.[70] (To be continued in Washburn Sixth Generation.)

+      1869   iv   Abisha6 Washburn, born on 30 Nov. 1751 in Attleborough,[71] baptized on 9 Feb. 1752 in Attleborough,[72] married Mary Wilmarth, daughter of Nathan and Mercy (Titus) Wilmarth (Jr.), of Attleborough,[73] on 19 Dec. 1776 in Attleborough.[74] (To be continued in Washburn Sixth Generation.)

+      1870    v   Jemima6 Gary Washburn, born on 30 Apr. 1754 in Attleborough,[75] married Robert Perry, of Rehoboth, MA, on 19 Mar. 1772 in Rehoboth.[76] (To be continued in Washburn Sixth Generation.)

+      1871   vi   Ebenezer6 Washburn, born on 8 Apr. 1756 in Attleborough,[77] baptized on 9 May 1756 in Attleborough,[78] married 1.) Sarah DeForest, daughter of Simon and Mary DeForest, and 2.) Hannah (___) McBride, widow of John McBride, of York, Ontario, on 24 Jan. 1803.[79] (To be continued in Washburn Sixth Generation.)

1872  vii   Simeon Washburn (Jr.), born on 8 Feb. 1759 in Attleborough,[80] possibly died in infancy, since no baptismal record was found for him in the Second Congregational Church in Attleborough.

1873 viii   Abigail Washburn, born on 28 Mar. 1761 in Attleborough,[81] possibly also died in infancy, since no baptismal record was found for her in the Second Congregational Church in Attleborough.

+      1874   ix   Caleb6 Washburn, born on 6 Mar. 1763 in Attleborough,[82] baptized on 11 June 1763 in Attleborough,[83] possibly married Chloe Puffer, daughter of Richard and Jemima (Albee) Puffer, on 4 Apr. 1787 in Keene, Cheshire Co., NH,[84] and settled in Keene, Cheshire Co., NH. (To be continued in Washburn Sixth Generation.)

1875    x   Molly Washburn, born on 29 Apr. 1765 in Rehoboth,[85] baptized on 12 Dec. 1765 in Attleborough,[86] marriage not found.

1876   xi   Marcy Washburn, born on 30 Aug. 1767 in Rehoboth,[87] possibly also died in infancy since no baptismal record was found for her in the Second Congregational Church in Attleborough.

+      1877  xii   Joshua6 Washburn, born on 30 Jan. 1770 in Rehoboth,[88] baptized on 12 June 1770 in Attleborough,[89] possibly also moved to Cheshire Co., NH, and married Hepzibah (___). (To be continued in Washburn Sixth Generation.)

(660.) Capt. Jonah5 Washburn, probably fourth son of (172) James4 Washburn (Jr.), (65) James3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born probably in Bridgewater or Middleborough, MA, on 16 Feb. 1733, married Huldah5 Sears, daughter of Lt. David4 and Phebe3 (Bryant) Sears,[90] of Middleborough, on 7 July 1756 in Middleborough.[91] She was born on 10 Aug 1737 in Middleborough,[92] baptized with her brothers Zebedee, Abner and David Sears, on 5 Sept. 1742 in the First Congregational Church in Middleborough,[93] a granddaughter of Josiah3 and Mercy4 (Howes) Sears,[94] and of Benjamin2 and Hannah4 (Eaton) Bryant.[95] On 22 Dec. 1733 David Sears of Plimton, mill wright, and his wife Phebe, gave a receipt for their share of the estate of her father, Benjamin Bryant, to Benjamin Eaton, the administrator of the estate.[96]

Jonah Washburn was a tanner in Middleborough, and served in Capt. John Pratt’s Company, under Lt. Col. Thwing, in the Crown Point Expedition in 1755 in the French & Indian War,[97] then as a Lieutenant of the 1st Company of Infantry, 4th Regiment, of the Massachusetts State Militia from Middleborough during the Revolutionary War, and was promoted to Captain after the war.

Jonah Washburn was appointed as guardian of Ruben Washburn, of Middleborough, son of his brother Ruben Washburn, late of Middleborough, on 5 Feb. 1759, in order to learn the trade of a tanner.[98]

On 19 Mar. 1764 Jonah Washburn, of Middleborough, tanner, sold land in Titicut to Theophilus Crocker, of Middleborough, recorded on 19 Aug. 1765, witnessed by Jabez Vaughan, Jr., and Reuben Washburn, with Huldah Washburn, wife of Jonah Washburn, releasing her dower.[99] On 27 June 1781 Jonah Washburn, of Middleborough, tanner, sold to Benjamin Pemberton, of Roxbury, MA, 100 acres of land in Middleborough which he had bought from Isaac Tinkham on 16 Jan. 1772, for “350 silver Spanish milled dollars,” with wife Huldah Washburn releasing her dower.[100] On 15 Nov. 1782 Jonah Washburn, of Middleborough, tanner, sold to Rebecca Scolly, of Middleborough, land in Middleborough that he had bought from Isaac Tinkham on 16 Jan. 1772, again for “350 Spanish milled dollars,” witnessed by Abner Washburn and James Soule “3d,” with wife Huldah Washburn releasing her dower.[101] On 15 Apr. 1786 Jonah Washburn, of Middleborough, Gentleman, sold to Joshua Eddy, Esq., all his lands in Middleborough, being about 300 acres, that he had bought from Moses Leonard and Isaac Tinkham, recorded on 3 Oct. 1787, with wife Huldah Washburn releasing her dower.[102]

Capt. Jonah and Huldah Washburn moved to Randolph, Orange Co., VT, in 1787.[103] They were living in Randolph, VT, in the 1791 federal census,[104] and in the 1800 federal census,[105] but he was not listed as a head of household in the 1810 federal census in Vermont. Capt. Jonah Washburn died on 12 Mar. 1810 in Randolph, VT, aged 77 years, and Huldah (Sears) Washburn died on 22 Mar. 1816 in Randolph, VT, aged 78 years, and they were both buried in Randolph Center Cemetery in Randolph, VT.[106] His gravestone has a Revolutionary War symbol on it.

(661.) Mary5 Washburn, probably only daughter of (172) James4 Washburn (Jr.), (65) James3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); born probably in Bridgewater or Middleborough, MA, in ca. 1735,[133] married Jabez King on 12 Apr. 1753 in Bridgewater.[134] His parents have not been determined. Jabez King served in the Revolutionary War from Bridgewater, enlisting first as a private in Capt. Elisha Mitchell’s Company, Col. Simeon Cary’s Regiment, in 1776. In Oct. 1777 he served under Capt. Joseph Keith on an expedition to Tiverton, RI, and by 7 Nov. 1777 he was serving in Capt. Cushing’s Company from Bridgewater. In April 1778 his commander was Capt. Abram Washburn, from Bridgewater, and his discharge was on 14 Dec. 1778. In 1780 he again served in the Continental Army, in Rhode Island under Capt. Nathan Packard, and Capt. James Allen.[135]

Jabez and Mary King lived in Bridgewater, MA, and they were still living in Bridgewater in the 1790 federal census.[136] No death or probate records found for either of them in Plymouth County, and they may have been living in Woodstock, Windsor Co., VT, in the 1791,[137] and 1800 federal censuses.[138] He died on 15 Feb. 1813 in Woodstock, Windsor Co., VT, aged 81 years,[139] but no probate records were filed for his estate in Windsor Co., VT.[140] She died on 13 May 1813 in Woodstock, VT, aged 77 years,[141] and they were both buried in Hendee Cemetery in Woodstock, VT.

Mary Washburn and Jabez King had children:

                    i   (Unnamed son), a twin, born on 15 Jan. 1754,[142] died on 25 Jan. 1754 in Bridgewater.[143]

ii   (Unnamed daughter), a twin, born on 15 Jan. 1754,[144] died on 26 Jan. 1754 in Bridgewater.[145]

iii   Elisabeth King, born on 27 Mar. 1755 in Bridgewater,[146] married Jedediah Grover, of Mansfield, MA,[147] on 27 Nov. 1777 in Bridgewater.[148] He may have been the Jedediah Grover, son of James and Sarah (Austin) Grover,[149] who was born on 23 May 1734 in Norton, MA,[150] and who served in the Revolutionary War in Capt. Isaac Hodge’s Company from Norton, MA, in 1777.[151] He was possibly the Jede Grover living in Foxborough, Suffolk Co., MA, in the 1790 federal census,[152] but they supposedly had a son born in Maine in 1786. A Jedediah Grover was a head of household in Bethel, York Co., ME, in the 1800,[153] 1810,[154] 1820,[155] 1830,[156] and 1840 federal censuses,[157] living amongst several other Grovers, who was apparently a different individual.[158] This Jedediah Grover was a head of household in Peru, Oxford Co., ME, in the 1820 federal census, living near his son, Edsell,[159] but he was not found in the other censuses in Maine or Massachusetts. They supposedly had children:[160]

a. Edsell Grover, born on 12 Nov. 1786 in Peru, Oxford Co., ME,[161] married Mary Walker, daughter of William and Sybil (Staples) Walker,[162] on 13 May 1821 in Peru, ME,[163] and died on 9 Jan. 1862 in Carthage, Franklin Co., ME.[164] She was born on 26 June 1800 in Falmouth, Cumberland Co., ME.[165] He was a head of household in Peru, Oxford Co., ME, in the 1820 federal census, but was still unmarried at the time.[166] She died on 5 Sept. 1842 in Carthage, Franklin Co., ME,[167] and he died on 9 Jan. 1862 in Carthage, Franklin Co., ME,[168] and they were both buried in Newman Cemetery in Weld, Franklin Co., ME. They supposedly had children:

1. Peter Smith Grover, born in 1822 in Peru, ME.[169]

2. Dennis Grover, born on 20 Dec. 1823 in Peru, ME,[170] married Jerusha Bean, daughter of Lewis and Elsie (Wheeler) Bean, on 1 May 1853.[171] She was born on 17 Aug. 1831 in Jay, Franklin Co., ME.[172] He died in the Civil War on 20 Nov. 1862 in East New York, Kings Co., NY,[173] and was buried in Cypress Hills National Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.

3. Mansfield Grover, born in Apr. 1826 in ME,[174] married Martha H. (___), who was born on 13 Mar. 1831 in ME,[175] and they moved to California. He died on 18 Apr. 1901 in Santa Ana, Orange Co., CA, aged 75 years, 2 months,[176] and was buried in Santa Ana Cemetery in Santa Ana, CA. She died on 12 Oct. 1912 in Los Angeles, CA,[177] and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles, CA.

4. Edsell Grover (Jr.), born on 23 Apr. 1829 in Carthage, Franklin Co., ME.[178]

5. Philena King Grover, born on 18 Dec. 1834 in Carthage, ME,[179] married Edward Ingraham Bean, who was born on 18 Dec. 1832 in Jay, Franklin Co., ME,[180] and lived in Farmington Falls, ME.[181] He died on 19 Mar. 1910,[182] and she died on 26 Sept. 1912,[183] and they were both buried in East Wilton Cemetery in Wilton, ME.

b. Ruth Grover

c. Betsey Grover

iv   Daniel King, born on 8 Feb. 1757 in Bridgewater,[184] possibly married Susanna Wood, daughter of Ephraim and Mary (Leach) (Soule) Wood (Jr.), of Middleborough,[185] on 7 Mar. 1784 in Middleborough.[186] She was born on 21 Dec. 1762 in Middleborough,[187] a granddaughter of Deacon Ephraim and Susanna3 (Howland) Wood,[188] and of Abiel and Sarah (Waterman) Leach.[189] They moved to Windsor Co., VT. She probably died by 1830, and he died after 1830, probably in Hartford, VT. Daniel King was a head of household in Pomfret, VT, in the 1791 federal census,[190] and in Hartford, Windsor Co., VT, in the 1800,[191] 1810,[192] 1820,[193] and the 1830 federal censuses,[194] where he was a farmer.
