Family of the Child of Martha4 Washburn and Edward Martin

The children of Martha Washburn and Edward Martin are traced through Bristol County, Mass., some of them migrating to New Hampshire, where I have not used original records, with the exception of census records, and one to Providence, R.I. The information posted by other researchers in the I.G.I. and on Ancestry.com may not be entirely accurate. I have not searched for probate records from New Hampshire or Vermont relating to this family. This branch will not be carried on further than this file.

Family of the Child of Joanna4 Washburn and Samuel Hackett

I am far less certain that Joanna Hackett is actually a Washburn descendant, not having proven it to myself. I have also used some secondary information posted by other researchers on this line, particularly for records from Shutesbury and Prescott, which have not had their vital records published, and I have not searched for probate records for William Haskins in Western Massachusetts to prove his children. This branch will not be carried on further than this file.

Ebenezer Vaughn, supposedly son of Thomas and Hannah (Peterson) Vaughn,[256] on 3 Nov. 1785 in New Salem, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co., MA.[257] He was born ca. 1763.[258] He was not a head of household in Hampshire Co., MA, in the 1790 federal census, but they were living in Shutesbury, Hampshire Co., MA, in the 1800 federal census,[259] and in New Salem, Hampshire Co., MA, in the 1810,[260] and 1820 federal censuses.[261] He died on 28 Apr. 1838 in New Salem, aged 74 years, a Revolutionary Pensioner,[262] and she was living with the family of her son-in-law Joseph King in New Salem, MA, in the 1850 federal census. She died a widow on 25 June 1856 in New Salem, aged 94 years.[263] They supposedly had children:[264]

a. Betsey Vaughn, born in 1786 in MA,[265] apparently never married. She was living alone in Prescott, MA, in the 1850 federal census, with no occupation listed.[266] She died on 11 Jan. 1881 in New Salem, MA, aged 94 years, 5 months.[267]

b. David Clark Vaughn, born on 6 Sept. 1788 in Shutesbury, Hampshire [now Franklin] Co., MA. He was enumerated next door to his father as a separate head of household in New Salem, Hampshire Co., MA, in the 1810 federal census,[268] but was not found in the 1820 federal census.

c. Judith Vaughn, born on 22 May 1791 in Shutesbury, MA.

d. Jacob Vaughn, born on 25 Jan. 1794 in Shutesbury, possibly the Jacob Vaughan who married Clarissa Felton, daughter of Nathaniel Felton,[269] and settled in Prescott, MA, where he was chosen as constable in 1831,[270] a school agent in 1836 and 1837,[271] and a field driver in 1837,[272] but the Jacob Vaughan living in Prescott, Hampshire Co., MA, in the 1830 federal census, appears to have been a younger man.[273]

e. Polly Vaughn, born on 27 Sept. 1796 in Shutesbury, married Eliphal King.[274] He was born in 1801 in MA.[275] They were living in New Salem, Franklin Co., MA, in the 1830,[276] 1840,[277] and 1850 federal census, where he was a farmer.[278] He died on 28 Aug. 1877 in New Salem, MA, aged 76 years, 4 months,[279] and she died on 14 Feb. 1888 in New Salem, aged 91 years, 4 months.[280]

f. Joanna Vaughn, born on 7 Apr. 1801 in Shutesbury, married Joseph King.[281] He was born in 1799 in MA.[282] They were living in New Salem, Franklin Co., MA, in the 1830,[283] 1840,[284] and 1850 federal census, where he was a carpenter.[285] He died on 27 Feb. 1885 in New Salem, aged 85 years, 10 months,[286] and she died on 3 Apr. 1887 in New Salem, aged 86 years.[287]

1782   iv   Phebe Haskins, born ca. 1764,[288] supposedly in Raynham,[289] married a (___) Dutton.[290] She was apparently the Phebe Dutton living in the household of her sister Anna Shaw in Prescott, MA, in the 1850 federal census, aged 86 years. She died a widow on 15 Apr. 1855 in Shutesbury, MA, aged 90 years, 11 months, of heart disease.[291]

1783    v   Anna Haskins, born say ca. 1767, supposedly in Raynham,[292] apparently died young.

1784   vi   John Haskins, born on 21 Mar. 1769, supposedly in Pelham or New Salem, MA,[293] married Sarah Willison, of Peterborough, NH,[294] but he died on 12 June 1800.[295] She supposedly died on 1 Jan. 1837 in Peterborough, Hillsboro Co., NH.[296] They supposedly had 3 children:[297]

a. Clarissa Haskins, born ca. 1792 in New Salem, MA.

b. John Haskins (Jr.), born ca. 1794 in New Salem.

c. Roswell Willison Haskins, born on 31 Jan. 1796 in New Salem, married 1.) Eliza Smith Caryl on 4 Nov. 1823 in Buffalo, Erie Co., NY.[298] She was born on 28 Mar. 1800 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT.[299] They were living in Buffalo, Erie Co., NY, in the 1830 federal census.[300] She died on 22 June 1836 in Buffalo, NY,[301] and he probably remarried to 2.) Emma (___). They were living in Ward 2, Buffalo, Erie Co., NY, in the 1840 federal census, where he was a “learned professional,”[302] and in the 1850 federal census, where he was a land agent.[303] He died on 15 Jan. 1870 in Buffalo, NY.[304]

1785  vii   Judith Haskins, born on 13 Feb. 1771 in Shutesbury, Hampshire (now Franklin) Co., MA,[305] marriage not found.

1786 viii   Anna Haskins, born on 20 Nov. 1773 in Shutesbury,[306] married James Shaw in 1792.[307] He was supposedly born on 12 Mar. 1769,[308] and they probably lived in the southern part of New Salem that later became Prescott, Hampshire Co., MA, but is now buried under the Quabbin Reservoir on the border of Franklin and Worcester Co., MA. Apparently there were two different contemporary James Shaws living in the Prescott area after the turn of the 19th Century, the other designated as “Capt.” James Shaw. The town of Prescott wasn’t incorporated until 1822, taken from the south part of New Salem and the East Parish of Pelham,[309] so this James Shaw probably had been living in the southern part of New Salem, Hampshire Co., MA. He was the only James Shaw in New Salem in the 1800 federal census,[310] and one of the two James Shaws in New Salem in the 1810 federal census.[311] He was not found in New Salem in the 1820 federal census.[312] He died on 12 Apr. 1827, in Prescott, MA, aged 56 years,[313] and Anna was still living in Prescott, Hampshire Co., MA, in the 1840,[314] 1850,[315] and 1860 federal censuses.[316] She died on 1 Jan. 1864 in Prescott, MA.[317] They supposedly had children,[318] order uncertain:

a. Phoebe Shaw, born on 4 Sept. 1793 in New Salem, MA, died supposedly on 7 May 1867.[319]

b. James Shaw (Jr.), born ca. Apr. 1797 in New Salem,[320] possibly the James Shaw “2nd” who married Mary Haskins, of Prescott, on 27 Nov. 1828 in Prescott.[321] A James Shaw “2d” was chosen as a “hogreever” in Prescott in 1829,[322] and a James Shaw was chosen as a surveyor of highways in Prescott in 1839.[323] He was probably one of the James Shaws living in Prescott, Hampshire Co., MA, in the 1830 federal census, although his age bracket is wrong.[324] He was not listed as a head of household in Prescott in the 1840 federal census; he may have been the male in his 40s living in his mother’s house in the 1840 census, but it appears that his wife may have already died. He died on 25 Nov. 1842 in Prescott, aged 45 years, 7 months.[325]

c. Joseph Shaw, born ca. 1799 in New Salem,[326] probably married Phebe H. (___), who was born ca. Oct. 1800 in MA.[327] They were living in Shutesbury, Franklin Co., MA, in the 1840,[328] and 1850 federal censuses, where he was a farmer.[329] He died on 28 Apr. 1861 in Shutesbury, MA, aged 61 years,[330] and she died on 28 May 1875 in Shutesbury, aged 74 years, 7 months.[331]

d. Jerusha Shaw, born ca. 1801 in New Salem,[332] married Benjamin Winter Jr., of Shutesbury, MA, on 7 Nov. 1822 in Prescott.[333] He was born ca. 1795.[334] They were living in Shutesbury, Franklin Co., MA, next door to his presumed father, Benjamin Winter, in the 1830 federal census.[335] She died on 21 Feb 1835 in Shutesbury, MA, aged 33 years,[336] and he remarried. They were living in Shutesbury in the 1840 federal census, where he was a farmer.[337] He served in the War of 1812, and he died on 19 July 1877 in Shutesbury, MA, aged 82 years.[338]

e. Justius Shaw, born ca. 1806 in New Salem.

f. Jarvis Shaw, born on 8 Dec. 1808 in New Salem, married Annis Barry, who was born ca. 1805 in MA.[339] He was chosen as a “hogreever” in Prescott in 1834.[340] They were living near his mother in Prescott, MA, in the 1840,[341] and 1850 federal censuses, where he was a farmer.[342] He died on 20 Sept. 1859 in Prescott, MA, aged 51 years,[343] and she died a widow on 30 Mar. 1880 in Prescott, MA, aged 74 years.[344]

g. Jason Shaw, born ca. 1810 in New Salem, died ca. 1820 in New Salem.[345]

h. Judith Shaw, born ca. 1812 in New Salem, died in Feb. 1898 in Athol, MA.[346]

i. Minerva Shaw, born on 10 Apr. 1818 in New Salem, married Otis Upton, son of Timothy and Sally Upton,[347] on 7 May 1835 in Prescott.[348] He was chosen as a surveyor in Prescott in 1836.[349] They were living in Prescott, MA, in the 1840 federal census, where he was a farmer.[350] She died on 29 Oct. 1848 in Prescott, MA, aged 31 years,[351] possibly in childbirth, and he was still living in Prescott, MA, in the 1850 federal census, a farmer.[352] He supposedly died on 11 Nov. 1892 in Prescott.[353]

j. Hannah Shaw, born on 26 Apr. 1819 in New Salem, died on 19 June 1903 in Prescott.[354]

k. Azubah Shaw, born on 20 July 1822 in Prescott, MA, died on 25 Feb. 1895 in Athol, MA.[355]

l. John Shaw, born ca. 1824 in Prescott, MA.

Family of the Child of Jonathan4 Washburn Jr. and Thankfull Newton

It appears that the only child of Jonathan Washburn Jr. to leave descendants was Hephzibah, who probably married Lewis Edson, and they had a son, and possibly a daughter, whose name I have not found. The family of the son will be carried on to the next generation.

Deliverance (Ames?)

(547.) Hephzibah5 Washburn, daughter of (147) Jonathan4 Washburn (Jr.), (60) Jonathan3, (43) John2 (5th), (28) John1 (4th); was still unmarried and living in Bridgewater in 1763, probably the Hepzibah Washburn who married Lewis5 Edson, son of Obed4 and Keturah4 (Willis) Edson,[356] on 30 Jan. 1770 in Bridgewater.[357] He was born on 22 Jan. 1748 in Bridgewater,[358] a grandson of Samuel3 and Mary (Dean) Edson (3rd),[359] and of Jonathan3 and Abigail (Stoughton) Willis.[360] Hephzibah Edson, wife of Lewis Edson, of Bridgewater, was baptized on 12 June 1774 in Quincy, MA.[361]

Lewis Edson was not found in the 1790 federal census, but he may have been the Lewis Edson who was living in Washington, Litchfield Co., CT, in the 1800 federal census,[362] and in Woodstock, Ulster Co., NY, in the 1810 federal census.[363] He was not found in the 1820 federal census, and he supposedly died in 1820 in Mink Hollow, Woodstock, Ulster Co., NY,[364] but no probate records were found for his estate in Ulster Co., NY.[365] According to Wikipedia, Lewis Edson began working as a blacksmith, but soon became a singing master, and composed some hymns which were published in “Chorister Companion” in 1782. His most popular works were Bridgewater, Lenox, and Green Field.[366]

Hepzibah Washburn and Lewis Edson supposedly had at least one son:

+      1787     i   Lewis6 Edson (Jr.), born on 23 Jan. 1771, supposedly in Bridgewater, MA,[367] baptized on 12 June 1774 in Quincy, MA, the same day as his mother,[368] married Orilla Mead in ca. 1799,[369] and they lived in Woodstock, Ulster Co., NY. (To be continued in Washburn Sixth Generation.)

1788    ii   (Possibly a daughter, born ca. 1786.)[370]

[234] Per the Ancestry.com World Tree file submitted on 14 June 2002 by Susan P. Canney, however this birth seems a little late for a marriage in 1758. She also lists this William Haskins as having died on 11 July 1780 in West Point, Orange Co., NY, which conflicts with the 1790 census data from New Salem, MA, which shows both a William Haskins and a William Haskins Jr. as head of households in New Salem in 1790.

[235] Per the Ancestry.com Haskins Family Tree file.

[236] Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790: Massachusetts, Bountiful, Utah, 1993, p. 118, New Salem Town, Hampshire County, the Willm Haskins household had 2 free white males aged 16 or older and 1 free white female. There were several other Haskins families in New Salem, including a Willm Haskins, Junr.

[237] New Salem VR, p. 139. However, the Ancestry.com World Tree file submitted on 25 Aug. 2001 by Robert Wilkinson, says that it was the father, William Haskins, Sr., who died in 1798 in New Salem, and William Haskins, Jr., died in the Revolutionary War at West Point, NY, on 11 July  1780, which is the date found in the Ancestry.com One World Tree.

[307] Ancestry.com World Tree file submitted on 14 June 2002 by Susan P. Canney, however identification of his parents is doubtful.

[308] The Ancestry.com World Tree file gives his parents as Joshua Shaw and Elizabeth Dickinson, but the given birth date does not match his recorded age at death. Palmer VRs, p. 68, has the birth of James Shaw, son of Joshuah and Elizabeth Shaw, on 12 Mar. 1757 in Palmer, but not the marriage of Joshua Shaw and Elizabeth Dickinson. Also in the Palmer VRs, p. 174, are the marriage intentions of a James Shaw and Mary Brown in 1780, and the marriage intentions of a James Shaw and Susanna McIlwain in 1785, which are much more likely those of the son of Joshua and Elizabeth Shaw born in Palmer in 1757.
